WORK IN PROGRESS
FROZEN CHAIR
Pieke Bergmans is known for her ability to challenge the boundaries of materials and perception, and this ‘Frozen Chair’ is a perfect example of this approach. In this project, she designed a production process that embraced unpredictability, allowing natural forces to shape the final outcome.
The process began with a series of wax archetype-chairs, which were carefully placed in an oven. The goal was to push them to the very edge - where the wax would soften, deform, and appear to collapse, yet still manage to hold its form. It was an extremely delicate balancing act, with many chairs melting entirely and losing their structure. But a few defied expectations, maintaining their stance at the tipping point of gravity. These survivors were then cast in bronze, preserving their seemingly fragile, fluid-like deformations forever.
Pieke Bergmans ‘freezes’ the process at just the right moment. As if she presses a button and time stops—or at least, the melting of the chair—right at the tipping point. A frozen moment in time, a solidified object, a frozen chair.
And despite their melted appearance, these chairs are anything but weak. They stand strong, capable of bearing even the weight of an elephant. Bergmans enjoys experimenting with perceptions, creating objects that seem on the verge of collapse yet are solid and durable. Through this project, she challenges both materials and people, reminding us that things are not always what they seem.
