I really love them a lot! Creating a new species is easier for me to do digitally, because it is basically an anatomical puzzle I am trying to solve, but the creatures truly come to life when I paint them in watercolors. 💕

I have been reading Samantha Shannon's The Priory of the Orange Tree 🍊and I must say: I LOVE THIS BOOK! Every couple of pages I find a scene or a creature I'd love to paint.
Even though my work revolves around fantasy, I always thought it would be too hard for me to read a fantasy book with all the lore and history. Turns out I misjudged myself. A whole new world just opened up for me and I can't wait to read it all ❤️

The horse page was drawn at a cafe in Zwolle (I love drawing horses!) and the hares were drawn in my studio. A day after I saw two hares running away from us on a walk. They are always so much bigger than I think they are! Truly magical ❤️

This started with a silly video of southern ground hornbills that my boyfriend sent me. I just couldn't believe how cool they were so I had to study them for a bit. I got lost in the world of hornbills today, because apparently there are a lot of different species and they all look amazing in their own way.
This however, is one of the two species of ground hornbills. They can fly as you can see but they prefer to run away when threatened, which is really funny to see 🤭
I think I'll stay in my hornbill-rabbit hole a little longer, because I'm in love❤️
