SHE BAKER (Research excerpts, as I’m writing it)
The nickname given to a teenage Jean entering the male-dominated trade of baking in Northern Ireland, 1979.
A working class country girl, arriving in Belfast to learn her trade.
At 19, she entered Northern Ireland’s Baker of the Year competition, up against over 2,000 men, most decades older.
She won.
In 1980, she became the first woman to take the title, and the first woman in the trade to earn more than a man.
SHE BAKER is my mum.
