We spent an existing studio visit in Munich with Matthias Mross He paints people you might walk past on the street without looking twice — and then makes you look. His canvases mix patterned fabrics, thick layers of paint, and a kind of patience that feels almost out of place in 2026. We talked about the faces in his work. The cities he carries with him. Why he still believes in painting — slowly, by hand, in front of a wall or a canvas — when so much of the world moves on without it. Matthias has painted murals across Munich, Georgia, Vietnam, France, and the US. His work has been shown at the Pinakothek der Moderne and MUCA. But what stayed with us wasn’t the list of places — it was how he talked about the people he paints. 🔄Rotate your phone Back in 2021 @st_emmi_lian made this Video which is precisely illustrating my work practice. How I meet the people living in and around the buildings I paint. And how they end up being painted as a mural or on canvas. And check all the details @st_emmi_lian put in the clip. I love the transitions of the people in the videos to the paintings I made of them. Dude came up with some crazy ideas while filming, for example those stop motion windshield cracks.

🐕“This mural depicts a typical Georgian street dog set against a traditional patterned background. In Georgia, street dogs are not seen as strays but as part of the community. They are cared for by the people and live peacefully among them—belonging to everyone and no one at the same time. I chose this motif to honor the unique relationship between people and street dogs in Georgia. These dogs move freely through the streets, yet they are deeply connected to the lives of those around them. They are peaceful, friendly, and often play an unexpected but powerful role in public life—standing beside protestors, guarding neighborhoods, and even earning the nickname riot dogs for their loyalty and presence during demonstrations. By placing the dog in front of a traditional pattern, I wanted to highlight its place within Georgian identity—an emblem of solidarity, resilience, and the quiet, everyday bonds that shape a culture. Last summer I transformed the entire museum hall at Technik Museum Sinsheim into a giant aircraft carrier — integrating the courtyard, the architecture and the original historic aircraft installations into one immersive mural, even adding sculptural elements cut out from the original metalsheets the building consists of. 35°C air temperature. 60°C on the south-facing metal facade. Me and @haukules_ @melone3.1 Robin @camposviola.ngo who assisted me almost collapsed several times but it was worth every second. The Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-21 now looks ready for takeoff straight from the carrier deck. Since they already got a real submarine as their latest attraction, I was comissioned to paint an Air Carrier at @technikmuseen_sinsheimspeyer in Sinsheim. So I transformed the whole building into the tower of the massive ship, so that it would interact with the whole place and the planes, giving off the illusion of a real flight deck. The USS Nimitz (CVN 68) is the first aircraft carrier of the Nimitz-class, a class of ten nuclear-powered supercarriers in the U.S. Navy. It was commissioned on May 3, 1975, and since was exporting western values (slide8-10), imperialism and exploitation. The Nimitz-class carriers, built between the late 1960s and early 2000s, are all still in active service today. Let’s put them all in a museum please.
