Hudson Heavies with @keepinitreelsportfishing
What a day. The mighty Hudson River is such a unique fishery, and the sheer volume of fish is astonishing. The screen was littered with marks nonstop, from 6:30am to 5pm, with every size class imaginable. After getting our fix of bass on chunked herring and sandworms, outgoing water temps on the mud flats hit 60 and it was glide o’clock. I have mixed emotions about catching these fish on their way to spawn, which is why it’s even more important to properly revive each and every one of them, no matter how big or small. They’re the future.
Big thanks to our friend Capt. Chris Oliver for putting us on and showing us what his home waters are all about.

A little full moon fun to start the spring. Tough bite. But after a long off-season, my lucky @takwaterman lid still has the juice.

Whoever said Christmas is the most wonderful time of the year was certainly not a tog fisherman from New England. Spring is finally springing.

I love the @onthewatermagazine boys. They worked the NJ Saltwater Expo all day, drove all the way down to the Bunka to talk to me after, and had an extremely late night because of it. But they also know how to party so it was fine. You’re gonna party with us on Cut & Retie tomorrow, correct? #cutandretie #onthewater #stripedbass #icefishing #clampizza #beerme #latenightthoughts
Incredible late-night sesh with the @onthewatermagazine boys. If you love failures, follies, foibles, and value good milk crates and Amish pretzels, you’ll want to hang with us this Friday. #cutandretie #icefishing #failarmy #stripedbass #onthewater #beermeplease
Bing bong!
The BASS issue is always a fun project, but this story was especially cool to write. I’ve been enamored by fishing in the City since graduating from college almost 9 years ago. Having done it a handful of times, I must say that the people, the sights, and the obstacles you encounter while bass fishing in Central Park make Manhattan’s few ponds a little extra special. Grab a copy, give it a read, and plan a trip this spring. Just don’t go in late April like @nick_onthewater and I did.

Watching hordes of herring swim around in crystal-clear water is just mesmerizing. Pre-freeze trout fishing would be a lot less exciting if not for these guys fueling the bite.

Thankful for late-to-leave river herring, a good trout stocking program, 2 lb. test, and relatives (of striped bass).

And as I drove home, heat on full blast, dried mackerel and herring scales whizzing through my car like a snowglobe on wheels, I thought: “I can’t wait to never do this again.”
Yes, saltwater fishing is bleak on Cape Cod right now. But, all jokes aside, respect to the old salts out there slingin’ sabikis and yoinking macks in the cold. If you need me, I’ll just be over here with my chain pickerel.

A 13-pound Molly George, my first DD and new personal best. Caught and released.
Rob later said it may have been even 14, although we weighed it in 3- to 4-foot swells. Either way, just holding a double-digit tog was surreal. They’re built different. I’m even more stoked to have witnessed four other fish over 10lbs come over the gunwale of the Reel E-Z, and each dash back to the depths following a quick photo shoot. Needless to say if you’re on the hunt for a double-digit blackfish, or just looking to hone your skills with some guidance from a great, @newportsportfishingcharters is your man.
Swipe to enjoy a haiku about some poor woman who probably inspired my new favorite nickname for tog.

Surrendered the September full moon tides to say “I do”. And THAT, my friends, is commitment.
2025 has been a big year—the biggest of our lives thus far. The best is yet to come. I love you more than striped bass and night tides @micaelatobs
