🗞️ Artist Highlight: Mats Mingus
In his project 'Tales From The Kingdom of Fear & Its Stronghold of Post-Truth Paranoia', Mats Mingus (KABK 2025) brings together painting and sculpture to reflect on how we take in news, stories, and information today.
His sculptural works 'Perception Shrine' feature a block of newspapers stacked on lime-sand glue bricks. It looks like a solid object, but what it represents is how history is built: one news story at a time.
Newspapers, for Mats, are like daily diaries. Each one chooses what to report, how to tell it, and what to leave out. These choices shape how we see the world.
Facing this shrine are paintings filled with anonymous figures. They’re caught in frozen blocks, just like we often feel when trying to make sense of today’s world. Each figure responds differently to the same scene: some believe, others doubt. Some turn away. Some try to take control. Mats calls them “perceivers,” just like us.
Together, the paintings and sculpture show how confusing and layered truth can feel. In a time where everyone has their own version of reality, Mats asks us to think about how stories are built, and how we each choose what to believe.
