In case you missed it last week…
Episode 04 of That Workplace Experience Podcast is now live 🎙️
Step inside Sustainable Workspaces at County Hall and see what designing a sustainable workplace actually looks like in the real world.
This one’s all about looking at things differently — stepping away from what you know, rethinking materials, and challenging the “this is how it’s always been done” mindset.
From reused furniture to innovative materials, there’s a lot to take in… and even a few things that surprised us.

Sustainable workplaces don’t have to be expensive 🌱
In this clip from our podcast episode with @materialworksstudio , we discuss the design of the @sustainableventures workspace at County Hall in London — a workplace built for a growing community of climate tech startups.
The brief was simple (and slightly terrifying):
Build a flagship sustainable workspace… but do it cheaper than anything before.
The solution?
👉 Use less.
Sometimes the smartest design move is knowing what not to add.

#SustainableWorkspacesAtCountyHall is a low carbon home for climate tech businesses that showcases innovative materials and circular construction techniques within a the historic County Hall building in London. A key part of the design strategy was to minimise impact by celebrating the existing as the 'as found'. This led to a multi textured appearance - layers of historic finish overlayed with un-painted plaster, and then joinery and fittings from regenerative materials.
Collaborating with organisations working on innovative building products and techniques was key. Demountable partitions were developed by@ubuild , mycelium acoustic baffles and food waste finishes produced by @biohmhome and low carbon plaster from @adaptavate .
The scheme dramatically reduced the amount of embodied carbon typically used for workspace fitout and points towards a new aesthetic and material language reflecting the demands of the climate emergency.

We were commissioned to design a a small addition to this Victorian terraced house in Stoke Newington, London. With a limited budget and space, the challenge was to transform the existing dark and cramped kitchen space into a bright and open space that would cater to the needs of a growing family. To achieve this an extensive roof light was installed within the side return of the house and the rear wall was opened up with large sliding window above a recessed window seating area. A careful coordination of the restricted space allowed for the inclusion of a kitchen island while still leaving space for a dining table. The robust feel of the polished concrete floor was offset by the use of exposed oak joists supporting the roof-light and forming the window seat, creating an aesthetic that was at once both contemporary, practical and welcoming.

A residential fit-out of a loft apartment in an industrial building in Hoxton, London. The heart of the space, the kitchen, uses a pallet of oak and ceramics, creating clear and simple forms that accentuate the scale of the existing space. An open area above the book shelves allows light to reach through into a mezzanine study area towards the back.

Choices and combinations of materials are key to our work. Here, natural oak combines with the grain of reclaimed London bricks and a polished concrete floor to define a language that is contemporary and practical yet also warm and welcoming.

#SustainableWorkspacesAtCountyHall is a low carbon home for climate tech businesses that showcases innovative materials and circular construction techniques within a the historic County Hall building in London. Key to the design was the use of reclaimed materials. We believe it's true that everything you need for a project probably already exists - it's just a case of finding it !. We spent many hours scouring salvage yards, websites and the odd skip to complete the project which included worktops from old school science labs, rescued corrugated metals sheets, many used doors and even reclaimed WCs and basins in the wash-rooms

Throw back to the first Material Works Project. We were asked to come-up with an idea of accenting an abandoned space - to create something unique on a shoe-string budget. The response was suspend LED light tubes with some carefully selected colour gels. More impact than we anticipated . . .

For the last year we have been preparing drawings for a new house within the grounds of a listed stately home in Surrey. The sensitivity of the site has seen a slow and considered gestation - working closely with conservation officers, historic building surveyors and ecology experts to produce a design that fulfils our client’s brief while engaging respectfully with the unique context.
Materially, the house draws on the local vernacular through the use of brick, knapped flint and limestone. This is balanced by an expressed timber structure that introduces warmth and grain to the interior. Natural insulation and lime-based finishes reduce embodied carbon and support a healthy internal environment.
The historic garden wall intersects small parts of the house, where historic brickwork becomes an interior finish and new openings connect through to historic outbuildings refurbished as part of the scheme.
Externally, native planting and areas of wilding soften the geometry, while photovoltaic panels, ground source heat pumps, heat-recovery ventilation and a highly insulated envelope ensure low operational energy use.
The scheme has now been submitted for planning and hopefully 🤞 we will be developing through to construction in 2026 - watch this space.
Our Victoria Park House project focused on creating a multifunctional space free from the restrictions of fixed furniture while able to adapt to the changing needs of our clients. A full height sliding glass doors and a minimally framed roof-light provide an abundance of natural day-light as well as a strong visual connections to the outside garden.
