B01V2 - Bond Series
@material_streams
This stool is the first physical prototype of the
Bond Series, a collection of furniture and wall
objects made out of ACP (aluminum composite
panels), also known as Dibond. What captured
my attention is the fact that this versatile and
ubiquitous material typically reaches landfills
well before the end of its life cycle and at the
same time, is extremely durable, resistant and
adaptable.
ACP is in an away, the marriage between two of
the most widespread, advanced and energy-in-
tensive materials humanity has been able to
come up with. The pieces in this collection are
an attempt to map the possibilities and conflicts
hidden within it.
All the plates that make up the B01 stool have
been reclaimed from film industry waste.

This is a project that I have been working on in different forms for the past two years: The Bond Series.
The Bond Series is a collection of objects made using reclaimed plates of a material composite commonly called Dibond. This composite is made out of a polyethylene core sandwiched between two thin layers of Aluminium. Plastic and aluminium are two of the most environmentally costly materials to produce on earth but despite this fact Dibond plates are widely used, mostly by the advertisement and construction industry. Now, in Europe most of this gets recycled, but the countries that produce the raw materials will pay the price of its extraction for generations to come. For this and many other reasons I say that reuse beats recycle every time.
From a design standpoint though, the materials in this CO2 sandwich are a match made in engineering heaven: It has a lifespan of 10+ years, comes in many different finishes and colours and is extremely stable. It can be bent, cut, milled and printed on.
But what really pushed me to start working on this is that thanks to the many new initiatives focusing on reclaiming materials from post-consumer sources it is now easy to get your hands on large amounts of Dibond without increasing demand for the fresh stuff.
All this inspired me to start this research into the design potential of this material. All the objects in this series can be flat packed and only require one allen key for assembly.

Bond Wall Shelf Light (6x120x25)cm.
A simple wall-mounted shelf. What I like the most about this piece is that it captures an idea that I discovered very early on in my work and has remained influential ever since. Namely that, once you've carefully identified all the variables that are relevant for whatever it is that you're doing and you've thrown them into the mix, there's not that much room for aesthetic decisions. And I find that most times, out of the arrangement of these variables emerges a sort of inherent expression of the object I'm making and when that happens, I know it's ready to come into existence. Special cameo by @u_joints highly recommend you check it out if you like to geek out about the things that hold the world together (literally).

Bond Stool (47x40x27)cm.
The first object of the Bond series, this simple stool is made completely out of reclaimed Dibond plates which are assembled using a specially designed clip system and rivet screws. Its shape, reminiscent of Albrecht Dürer's famous signature iconogram, takes advantage of the flexibility of the plates to create tension between the parts, thus increasing the stability of the whole ensemble.

Bond Wall Shelf (27x150x26cm.)
This shelf -and all the pieces in the Bond Series- are made out of reclaimed Dibond plates. Working with reused materials really made me think of furniture as a sort of temporary configuration of matter on its way to decomposition (aren't we all tho?). This idea became the reason why all the designs in the series are assembled using only common screws. This way all its components can be repurposed at the next stage of their journey.

Bond Wall Lamp (84x119x10cm.)
In architecture, a Brise-Soleil is any permanent solar obstruction system that blocks or deflects the solar rays. It is an ubiquitous, low-tech solution for climate control in buildings that has been around for ages. The Bond Wall Lamp is a play on the clean and functional aesthetics of the Brise-Soleil, blurring the line that separates architecture from sculpture. It is also a great addition wherever soft, reflected light is needed.

Bond Bench (45x150x30cm.)
This design was inspired by the radical yet calculated works of the american minimalist movement. It is formed by a sequence of interlocking planes. That's it.

A two-legged interpretation of Charlotte Perriand's 1953 Tokyo Bench. I modified the size to fit in our living room and used brass pins to secure the top to the legs instead of screws used in the original design, pretty happy with the result.
