Before any concrete is poured, homebuilders in King and Snohomish counties move through an intensive planning and review process that can have a major impact on how the rest of the project goes. Builders need to coordinate site assessments, geotechnical studies, environmental considerations, utility planning, and engineering work long before a permit is approved.
They also must collaborate with inspectors and regulators to meet land‑use rules, safety standards, and community expectations. Importantly, builders must ensure they are meeting the community’s vision for housing defined in local comprehensive plans.
While this sort of work is often not visible, it is a big part of what MBAKS members do every day to build responsibly, anticipate challenges, and ensure each project supports the long‑term health and resilience of our region. It’s also a reminder that a strong foundation starts well before construction begins.

Expanding housing options creates measurable gains for Washington communities.
For every 100 single-family homes built in Washington, the impact is clear: roughly $36 million in income for residents, $8.7 million in state and local revenue, and over 300 jobs supported. Multifamily construction produces similar benefits.
At the same time, new homes represent real progress toward meeting our region’s housing needs. Expanding supply not only provides economic benefits, it helps make home happen for more people in our region.

Rampathon season is here!
Big thanks to @HolmbergMechanical for building a ramp for a young neighbor this weekend. After a medical emergency last year, she needed a more accessible way to get to her weekly appointments. This new entrance provides the independence and ease she deserves!
Shoutout to @DunnLumber1907 , our 2026 Signature Sponsor, for helping us change lives.
We still need Ramp Captains! Ready to lead a build?

In a new Everett Herald op-ed, MBAKS Board President Vitaliy Gutsalo, highlights Snohomish County as a strong example of how housing and environmental goals can work together.
The County’s own data shows that their tree code is working to protect and enhance tree canopy while delivering much-needed homes. Since 2014, these efforts have resulted in more than 31,800 new trees and 17.8 million square feet of protected canopy.
It’s a model of smart, balanced policy grounded in results—and one decision-makers across our region should take note of.

Housing is not just constrained by zoning. How cities operate matters too. In a recent column, Todd Welch from @everettherald explains how building a home involves many parts of local government, from planning and utilities to permitting and fire. When those departments are not aligned, projects can face delays, conflicting requirements, and longer timelines. As timelines stretch, costs rise, making it harder to meet our region’s housing needs.
