THE LIFE OF THINGS. It was a pleasure to co-curate this exhibition with @hemmaschmutz for @lentoslinz@salzkammergut.2024 I want to thank the artists for their trust and contribution: Said Baalbaki, Maeve Brennan, Hera Büyüktaşçıyan, CATPC / Renzo Martens, Ines Doujak, Assaf Hinden, Moussa Kone, Oliver Laric, Nii Kwate Owoo, Markus Proschek, Michael Rakowitz, Anja Ronacher, Dierk Schmidt, Philip Topolovac.
Also special thanks to curatorial assistant @saharajonas for her essential contribution to the project. Thumbs up to our exhibition design by @klemenbreitfuss & Julian Brües. The exhibition presents contemporary perspectives which shed light on the fate of artworks and artefacts amidst looting, destruction and restitution. The spectrum of works ranges from an exploration of colonial looting and dubious collecting activities, state-organised art theft and expropriation in the Third Reich, to cultural genocide through the removal and demolition of cultural heritage. @said_baalbaki@hera.buyuktasciyan_studio@maevekrbrennan@catpc_lusanga@renzomartens@assafhinden@_moussakone@oliverlaric@philip_topolovac

Giger, Anna Jermolaewa, Alfred Kubin, Nicolás Lamas, Angelika Loderer, Christian Kosmas Mayer, Nika Neelova, Markus Proschek, Natalia Domínguez Rangel, Katharina Sieverding, Philip Topolovac, Chin Tsao, Martin Walde, Michał Zawada. #LastChance: The World Without Us is on view only until Sunday, May 10.
The exhibition brings together artistic positions that move between Deep Time — timescales of billions of years in which human existence is little more than a fleeting moment — and Cosmic Horror: a state oscillating between fascination and unease in the face of a non-human existence that exceeds our understanding of time and space.
Our sincere thanks go to all the artists whose works have shaped this exhibition. Pictured: some of the participating artists together with the curatorial team at the opening.

Eröffnung von „The World Without Us“: Ein Blick in ein Universum jenseits des Anthropozäns.

Opening of “The World Without Us”: A glimpse into a universe beyond the Anthropocene.
The exhibition outlines a cosmology that does not place humans at its center, but instead directs our gaze toward a universe that exists beyond human scale. Curated by Markus Proschek and Hemma Schmutz, it follows four guiding motifs in which contemporary art, historical works, and natural history artifacts stand side by side as equals. From their proximities, juxtapositions, and ruptures, a dense web of meanings emerges.

! Last weekend to see DISCARD A SHAPE AT LAST at Kunstforum Montafon! 💫 I’ll stop by at tomorrow's finissage in the mountains as well!
‘The exhibition „Discard a Shape at Last“ by @biancaphos and @markusproschek at @kunstforummontafon brings together two artistic approaches that understand fragmentation not as loss, but as a fundamental condition. Both practices explore those moments when forms are abandoned, sedimented, or broken—and when knowledge emerges where continuities break down. The exhibition thus opens up a terrain in which history, matter, and memory do not appear as closed systems, but rather continuously reassemble themselves as dynamic surfaces.’
Extremely grateful for the collaboration with @markusproschek ✨ and many thanks to @_andkop for the way she set the exhibition in motion with her words at the opening 💫 and curator Roland Haas for his sustained engagement throughout the whole exhibition ♾️

The exhibition „Discard a Shape at Last“ by @biancaphos and @markusproschek at @kunstforummontafon explores, through sculpture and painting, how the traces of traumatic events—from the geological to the historical and biographical—transform into a visual vocabulary: discarded forms, fragments, and gaps that can no longer be restored into an original whole. The exhibition brings together two artistic approaches that understand fragmentation not as loss, but as a fundamental condition. Both practices explore those moments when forms are abandoned, sedimented, or broken—and when knowledge emerges where continuities break down. The exhibition thus opens up a terrain in which history, matter, and memory do not appear as closed systems, but rather continuously reassemble themselves as dynamic surfaces. 📸 @theartofrolandhaas Special thanks to @_andkop for the brilliant introduction into the exhibition at the opening.
🔵 The World Without Us. Eröffnung: 05.02.2026 / 19:00, Eintritt frei
As a result of the Enlightenment, science extended the traditional Western conception of space and time into the realms of sheer infinity. The universe became older, larger and colder. This coincided with a sense of unease that mankind was no longer at the centre of the universe. The exhibition „The World Without Us“ brings together artistic positions that draw on concepts such as “deep time” – time periods spanning billions of years, in which human existence is little more than a fleeting moment – and “cosmic horror”, a feeling caught between fascination and terror when faced with non-human existence that is inconceivable to our notions of time and space.
