Ely Oaks returned to Amsterdam this April for his debut at Melkweg. We caught up with him to talk about his evolution over the last 6 years and how Producer Coaching became part of the story.
Check it out! 😃
@anotr.music was the most interesting thing happening in 2025 for me, even though they’ve been around much longer already. What are they doing recently that makes them stand out, makes them sound so much like them? Their latest hit ‘Talk To You’ is a prime example to listen to for clues.
It seems like around the year 2022, ANOTR decided to change their approach (their 2022 album is also called ‘The Reset’). ANOTR’s sound changed quite dramatically from largely housey to more disco, soul and funk oriented.
What the duo is doing a lot nowadays, is organise music retreats. They work on music at cool AirBnB’s, bringing a bunch of musicians, which means: original recordings, completely attuned to what’s happening at that moment, and creating the parts together in real time. Not Splice disco guitars that may or may not fit your idea! You can hear guitars recorded specifically for ‘Talk To You’ in the track (and a Fender Stratocaster played in the 4th pickup position through a chorus effect does shout ‘disco’ 🪩).
Also, they seem to approach their music much more like song first, production second now. And they can because next to guitar, keys and bass players, they also bring amazing vocalists to these retreats - singers who can sing a full song - instead of having to make do with vocal samples or a topline created after the fact. If you want a hit, it tends to happen a lot easier when your track is actually a great song, not just an amazing production. ‘Talk To You’ has several incredibly catchy hooks that you will probably already sing along to at first listen. Everything is locked and connected because of the approach.

Dance music would not have sounded the way it sounds today without this man. The legendary @ben_liebrand was thé pioneer in electronic mixes and production back in the 80s and 90s and is still going strong. Look him up. Was great to have the pleasure to meet! 🎶🎧
