Smiling without realizing you’re depressed is a wild feeling. Saying yes to things that doesn’t get done then compiled with everything else only makes the weight feel heavier. I’ve spoken to multiple black men recently and many were thankful that they got through March. All said March was a heavy month. Good thing is if you’re reading this, you’re still here! Be honest with yourself! Therapy does help and It’s okay when someone asks you “How are you?” And you say “not good” Thank you to everyone who prayed and sent positive energy! #Depression is a wild thing but you can overcome it. My unc said “It can’t be that bad, I was on drugs” lol regardless of comparison because he lived many lives, it made me smile that he also overcame it! Ps Kendrick got it wrong, somebody is praying for you & somebody is praying for him too! I also made this photo black and White because my hands were ashy 😂 can’t make it up. I personally want to thank @compton_wellness_collective @abigail.lopezbyrd & everyone else! I really appreciate yall!

Making a surprise visit to see my mom & pops was definitely one for the books! Unfortunately, pops had radiation during my visit and thankfully moms was scheduled for chemo the following week! It’s wild to think both of my parents are experiencing different forms of cancer at the same time! Another reminder for me to stay healthy! On a positive note: My kids had an opportunity to meet their great grandparents and many other people who mean the world to me. A time was had! We are definitely looking forward to the next trip. Please stay healthy and remember to check in on loved ones who may be battling any form of cancer. It’s a lot for those who are battling and those who are watching their loved ones experience it. 🙏🏾✨ Also get yourselves checked out. You never know!

Being at Sculpture Park wasn’t just an experience it was life changing! I’ve traveled to galleries, public art spaces, & museums around the world and I’ve never felt what I felt today. Seeing the details, the messages, and being embraced from everyone all while @yolikegeorge played in the background “Made me think of my grandfather” it honestly was one of the first experiences outside of @Comptonmuseum where I cried and believe me I wasn’t the only one. It was a reminder for myself and many others of the importance of art and how art changes lives and communities. Seeing yourself in images reminds you of who you are in this world! If you haven’t seen it in person it’s a must! I would like to personally give a huge shout out to summaeverythang summaeverythangccinc @Neighborsskateshop every vendor, and volunteer. It was such an amazing experience!! Thank you 🙏🏾✨

Three years ago today, our founders @markbyrd_ & @abigail.lopezbyrd opened the doors to something Compton had never seen before — the first and only museum in the city, the Compton Art and History Museum. In just three years, we’ve presented 10 powerful exhibitions, showcased the work of 100+ artists, and welcomed thousands into a space dedicated to honoring the layered, complex, and ever-evolving story of Compton. Along the way, we’ve hosted dozens of book talks, community conversations, cultural events, and fundraisers supporting local organizations — creating a true hub for connection and creativity. What started as a vision has grown into a cultural home for our community — and now we’re looking ahead and preparing to expand.

This pic really speaks volumes. 🖤 Over 700 people showed up for something my brother and his wife built with intention, heart, and PURPOSE. A whole 5K… from the ground up. That’s not small. That’s legacy work. And let me say this loud. There is NOTHING like a man with vision, a plan, and a calling from God. That kind of leadership hits different. 🙌🏽 Getting this on the first day of Black History Month? Yeah… God’s timing is undefeated. I couldn’t be prouder of them if I tried. They stay amazing me, and I love that for them. What hits me the most though? The younger cousins watching. Seeing him lead, organize, inspire, and move people? That matters. That’s planting seeds they don’t even realize yet. Representation in real life, not just talk. And Compton… y’all showed OUT. Love, support, community on full display. This is Black excellence. This is family. This is what it looks like when you walk in your purpose. 🖤🔥 #comptonmuseum #goddidit #compton @comptonmuseum @colorcompton @markbyrd_

🖼️ : @markbyrd_ @anthnyxyz @colorcompton 📸 : @xavierdenauw 🔗 : @urbanfilmsfestival @rstyleofficiel 🌍 : @if_officiel @paris_maville @legacywestmedia 📍: @comptonmuseum 🤎 : @thekingcenter @officialmlking3 @berniceaking From Memory to Movement: Urban Cultures and the Legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. On January 19, 2026, as the United States honors the life and legacy of Martin Luther King Jr., Xavier De Nauw traces an invisible axis linking Compton, Paris, and Washington—a cultural passageway where urban expression, hip-hop, and King’s enduring legacy engage not as static remembrance, but as a living, breathing force. For this occasion, the Urban Films Festival commissioned the French photographer—based in Los Angeles for more than a decade—to create a portrait series dedicated to the engaged members of Color Compton, including artist Anthony Lee Pittman. Each portrait becomes a distinct voice within a collective narrative, expressing a shared humanity rooted in artistic practice, civic engagement, and intergenerational transmission. These photographs celebrate a cultural friendship forged between the Compton Art & History Museum, Legacy West Media, and the Urban Films Festival, with the support of the Institut Français and the City of Paris—affirming a shared conviction that art can build enduring bridges between peoples, places, and histories. Looking ahead, a common momentum emerges: supporting the rise of hip-hop museums on both sides of the Atlantic, while extending the legacy of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games into dialogue with Los Angeles 2028—through a sequence of cultural encounters across key cities, affirming a shared commitment to cultural exchange in celebration of America 250 and the Bicentennial of Photography. #MLKday2026 #BelovedCommunity #UrbanFilmFestival #ComptonMuseum #xavierdenauw

On June 7, a massive protest erupted in Compton following an ICE raid at a nearby Home Depot. What began as an ordinary walk turned historic when the founder of the Compton Museum found himself in the middle of the action—camera in hand—documenting the community’s response in real time. Just weeks later, on July 26, the Compton Museum unveiled Boundless Echoes—an exhibition tracing Compton’s legacy of protest, resistance, and collective power, with a spotlight on the recent ICE demonstrations that shook the city. History isn’t distant. It’s happening now.
