Super Gas 1
2023
Inkjet print on card mounted on MDF
22 x 122 cm
——
Super Gas 1 uses digital drawing and collage to recast two notable projects of architectural visualisation which explore speculative built form as a proxy of geographic statelessness - Archizoom’s No-Stop City (1969) and Archigram’s Instant City (1968-1970). The former expansive and the latter nomadic, they conceive of the metropolis as having the ability to burgeon, graft and be helmed without border or ground.
A trio of Andrea Branzi’s research drawings for No-Stop are refashioned as virtual splitting vistas which attempt to navigate the diminishing space between UAVs, mutated fighter jets, rogue missiles and flight paths. Parodying the carrier balloons which inform the main structural economy of Instant City, fleets of geostationary satellites guide the portals to these utopias, waiting to be misidentified and shot down by feuding states below.
The resultant work examines the erosion of prophecy and imagination for future city models in contemporaneity, where conceptions of terra are constantly breached by civil war, new technology, and a destabilised schema of architecture as it migrates across mediums.

A Colonnade Eclipsing
2023
inkjet print on card
21 x 30cm
This work is on display at @nextdoor.ari as part of ‘Currents’, alongside works from a number other Gold Coast based creatives, until June 3. Opening hours: 11:30am to 5pm.
———
A Colonnade Eclipsing follows the wresting of Bernini’s Colonnato di San Pietro from its previous deployment in a 1938 design entry for the Piazza Imperiale at E42. In the original photomontage from which it is sourced, the compositional precedence given to the colonnade appears to evoke the fictive descent of the PNF from the Holy Roman Empire; a schema ultimately broken by the site’s desolation and subsequent reformation as the EUR following World War II. Most notably portrayed within Michelangelo Antonioni’s 1962 film L’Eclisse (The Eclipse), this shifting backdrop beyond Bernini’s colonnade has been historically recast as a shadow-strewn, bomb-haunted locus of disaffection.
Considering these developments to its narrative context, the colonnade is permitted to reappear in its own revised cosmography of violent eclipse, which undermines commemoration and characterises the architectural fragment as fugitive. Through poeticising the inherent lack of montage to fully reconcile its parts - in both the source material as well as in this work - all external, ideological embellishments begin to flay and funnel into a volatile morphology that is bolstered by the recurring photographic artefacts of the colonnade.
