Finishing my first academic year teaching full-time Physical Education students with Portobello Institute.
A real milestone for me at 51.
After over 20+ years of experience, stepping back into education in this role wasn’t easy, but it’s been worth every minute. A different challenge, a different environment, but one I’ve truly enjoyed.
Great to pass on knowledge, share experiences, and hopefully make a real impact with the next generation of PE teachers.
Now it’s time to support the students and help guide them through their exams.
Proud of the journey so far… and excited for what’s ahead for them.
With over 20 years of experience working with children, I am delighted to introduce the game of golf to those who might not otherwise have the opportunity to play it for various reasons.
I have lost my Marbles but before I realise what I have done let me

Active Body Active Mind 💛
Many children experience anxiety, worries, or big emotions, and as parents, it’s not always easy to know how best to support them.
Over the next 4 weeks, we will share simple, child-friendly exercises to help children slow their bodies down, manage worries, and build confidence in a calm and supportive way.
Through colouring activities, easy breathing techniques, and positive mindset tools, children will learn practical skills they can use at home and in school.
If this sounds helpful for your child, make sure to follow and tag our new page so you don’t miss any of the weekly tools and resources.
Because every child deserves to feel calm, supported, and understood 💛 please tag any body that needs this help and follow my new page @activebodyactivemindire #free #support #mindset
In 2026, I’ll be launching Unleash My Drive, a programme designed to introduce golf to children who may never otherwise get the opportunity to play the sport.
Having worked in disadvantaged communities for the past 26 years, I’ve seen first-hand how cost, access, transport and perception can prevent children from ever trying sports like golf, regardless of interest or potential.
Golf offers so much more than just a game. It builds confidence, focus, resilience, respect and self-belief, and it can be a lifelong source of physical activity and wellbeing, especially for children who may not always thrive in traditional team sports.
Through Unleash My Drive, I’ll be working closely with Golf Ireland to bring golf directly into schools and communities, supporting children who don’t have the opportunity to access the game. Alongside introducing golf, the programme creates a safe and supportive space to talk about mental health and wellbeing, using simple, fun and inclusive sessions that focus on enjoyment, movement skills, confidence and connection rather than performance.
This isn’t about creating elite golfers.
It’s about creating opportunity.
More to come as we build towards 2026 🤍

At 50, I’m now a teacher and tutor of Physical Education for Portobello Insitute, and I’ve completed my Honours Bachelor’s Degree in Physical Education 🎓 @portobelloinstitute
I never sat the Leaving Cert. Living with dyslexia closed doors for me, or maybe I closed them myself out of fear. But working with children has always been my constant, and after 20 years teaching PE, I finally stepped back into college with @portobelloinstitute .
That decision changed everything.
Last night, I was honoured to receive a Sports Special Commendation Award and be named Student of the Year 2025. And now, my college has trusted me with something that means the world: the opportunity to tutor future PE teachers.
For me, it’s simple — it’s never too late to open new doors, face the fears that once held you back, and turn them into opportunities.
Bringing Golf to the Heart of the inner City
In partnership with Golf Ireland, we have brought the “Unleash Your Drive” golf program to the inner city of Dublin — an area where opportunities for children to experience sports like golf are often limited.
The program is about much more than learning to swing a club. Through fun and engaging golf sessions, children are developing their fundamental movement skills (FMS) — balance, coordination, and control — while also discovering the power of golf to support their mental health and wellbeing.
For many of these young people, it’s their first introduction to the game. But as Mark and the team have seen, it quickly becomes a space for confidence building, focus, and calm. Each session helps the children not only improve their physical skills but also find a sense of belonging and pride — showing that golf truly can be a game for everyone, no matter where you’re from. @golfirelandofficial@golf_foundation_org@nickdougherty5
At 50 years of age, I’ve completed my Honours Bachelor’s Degree in Physical Education 🎓.
Looking back, I never sat a Leaving Cert. Living with dyslexia closed many doors for me — or maybe, for a long time, I was the one closing them myself. For years, fear and doubt kept me standing on the outside looking in.
But I always had one constant in my life: working with children. For over 25 years, I’ve been on the sidelines, in the sports halls, and in the classrooms, doing what I love.
After 20 years teaching PE, I finally decided to take a leap and go back to college. It wasn’t easy, but I was ready. And that step opened doors I never imagined could open.
Now those doors stay open. The fear is gone.
The college I attended not only recognised my degree but also the experience I’ve carried with me from years in schools and communities. They’ve now trusted me with something that means the world — the opportunity to become a tutor for them, guiding future PE teachers.
This isn’t just about teaching classes. It’s about helping the next generation to step into schools with confidence, energy, and ideas. It’s about shaping PE teachers who can inspire children, give them belief, and create memories in sport and physical education that will last a lifetime.
For me, this journey proves something simple: it’s never too late to open new doors, to face the fears that once held you back, and to turn them into opportunities.
