We were deeply honored to be welcomed into Henry Selick’s stunning, puppet-filled home to interview him for the documentary. Known for his brilliant work on The Nightmare Before Christmas and James and the Giant Peach (ultimate favorites among most of our followers) it was difficult not to ask hundreds of questions and spend hours admiring the beautiful work surrounding us. We kept Kent in mind the entire time and focused on their collaboration on Coraline, from the evolution of Mother to Other Mother, to how Kent’s real Scottie dogs inspired his sculpts for the film. As most of you know by now, we will be shooting Kent’s interview portions for the documentary using stop motion animation. The puppet is based on a self-portrait sculpture Kent sculpted of himself (updates soon!) but we have been chipping away at the set & prop designs and builds for months now. Campaign backers will be receiving a Summer update this week with a ton of BTS photos and our design guide but I wanted to share a bit of what we’ve been working on✨ Originally we were just going to build one set, Kent’s library, to use as an interview room. We quickly discovered the need for two sets which would encompass Kent’s home studio as well. He sculpted and painted from home for over half of his career and it felt very necessary to include both. He also designed and built this building and each room from the ground up and it housed all his creations and oddities for years. I worked with Kent’s muse and partner in life @marthahautmelton102 to design and replicate as much as possible from the original rooms Kent designed. Production Designer/genius @littlescenery built these as 3D models so that we could laser-cut and hand build walls and props at the correct scale in relation to the puppet. We scanned in and molded the original maquette and @walkorun_productions made us foam duplicates to use as production stand-ins. After multiple planning sessions with @littlescenery , our wonderful art director @ooopsifelted and fabricator/painter extraordinaire @maw112 we were ready to begin construction. Thanks to the amazing fellows at @screennovelties for lending us the build space, the crew spent a full weekend assembling the major pieces of both sets. The results are incredible and near-perfect replicas of both rooms. Next steps are paint and props, and I cannot wait to show you all what’s in store. This film is so lucky to have the most talented crew of all time. We had the immense honor of being invited to John Musker’s beautiful treasure trove of a home to interview him and Ron Clements for the @kentmeltondocumentary . The day was full of laughter, memories and amazing sculpts to behold. Having worked with Kent on numerous films including Aladdin, Hercules and Treasure Planet, these two brilliant men (and personal heroes to many) shared incredible insight into the ever-changing process of traditional animation and how the usage of maquettes evolved throughout the years.
