Welcome to experience three live performances at Platform on Sunday May 3rd at 4pm.
The framework “Hesitation can slow down decision-making” brings together three filmmakers that are in a process of developing new work, using concepts of imperfection, not knowing and boundary-crossing while pondering on the parameters of filmmaking in different performative acts. To the drones of the daxophone and the quiet stirrings of aquatic beings, Maria Ångerman is asking: when does one become native – and who has the right to define that? Through loops, translating old recordings and making tea Azar Saiyar is questioning when and where the political becomes personal, and the personal political. Lotta Petronella comes in uninvited, performing a rap, a prayer, that attends to the i and eye of Joan of Arc’s hesitation of sharing her voices. Made in collaboration with @filmverkstaden @platform_rf @mariaangerman @azarsaiyar @lotta_petronella Kindly funded by @taikegram @skr @svensk -österbottniska samfundet konstsamfundet

I'm pleased to announce that my short film Even a Dead Star Can Be a Lighthouse will be presented as part of Professor Ilona Hongisto's lecture Elokuvan historia ja meri: Audiovisuaalinen Itämeri at Kino Regina in Helsinki next week.
The lecture is part of Kino Regina’s Film History and the Sea-lecture series, which focuses on cinematic ways of depicting and imagining maritime environments. Thursday, 23.4 at 15:15
The lecture is open to the public and free of charge.

Inspired by symbiosis and the adaptability of marine beings, the film speculates what might happen at the edge of the Baltic Sea when the oxygen levels keep declining.

Even a Dead Star Can Be a Lighthouse Dokzaal 16.11 at 19h, Plantage Doklaan 8-12, Amsterdam. What happens when oxygen fades at the edge? Maria Ångerman will present two works in dialogue that epxlore the shifting ecologies beneath the surface. The short film Even a Dead Star Can Be a Lighthouse is a speculation on the resilience and adaptability of aquatic life as it encounters changing environmental conditions. (Un)Intentional Migrators is a performance lecture that reflects on evolutionary ecology and invasive species to the sounds of the daxophone. Among the whispers of underwater beings, the question remains: who has the right to decide who belongs? Maria Ångerman is an artist and filmmaker based in Finland, who is interested in how threshold spaces betwen land and sea reveal processes of loss, resilience and transformation, while also offering grounds for imagining alternative futures. At SOLU / Bioarts Society on Sunday October 26th at 4pm. Hesitation can slow down decision-making.
Empiminen voi hidastaa päätöksentekoa. Tvekan kan göra beslutsfattande långsammare.

The exhibition '5,9‰ – dive into the Archipelago Sea' is now open the last weekend (till 14.9) in The Archipelago Center in Korpoström, where I’m exhibiting the video installation ‘Even a Dead Star Can Be a Lighthouse’ and the photo collages ‘Warriors, Grievers, Oracles and One-Eyed Poets’. The exhibition highlights the natural history and unique character of the Archipelago Sea, as well as current research in the area. The exhibition also features works by artists in residence at the Archipelago Center's ProArtibus program, as well as the Fern Orchestra science and art collective. The artists in residence participating in the exhibition are Valter Kuni, Ninni Wager and Maria Ångerman. A special thanks for the support @kulturfonden @slsfinland @proartibus

Pleased to announce that my short film Even a dead Star Can Be a Lighthouse is part of the screening at SOLU Space / Bioarts Society in Helsinki at Night of the Arts 14th August 16:00-20:00.
The screening To notice is to remember showcases a collection of short films and moving image works by Bioart Society members. The program “highlights a plurality of mediums and matters, each offering a lens attuned to the quietly urgent and the often overlooked”. Even a Dead Star Can Be a Lighthouse (11:30) takes the viewer on a submerged journey at the edge of the Baltic Sea affected by severe eutrophication and rapidly declining oxygen levels. Informed by theories of symbiosis and sea beings’ plasticity, it speculates on how these life forms might adapt to the altered conditions.

Currently at a residency in Plantage Dok in Amsterdam, I am developing the project ‘even a dead star can be a light house’. Welcome to the open studio 23.1. 6-8 pm! The project envisions life in the near future along the Baltic Sea’s shoreline—a unique brackish marine ecosystem under significant stress from global and regional human activities. The project comprises an experimental film, an artist book, and series of printed phytograms, all reflecting on adaptability and survival in a changing world. The film ‘even a dead star can be a lighthouse’ is speculating the effects of declining oxygen levels in a submerged environment. Drawing inspiration from evolutionary theories of symbiosis and the plasticity of individual species, the film journeys along the marine edge, where eutrophication and hypoxia has incited plant hybridization. The exhibition “Places of Unrest and Restoration” had a great turn-up for the opening last night. Thank you all for joining! The exhibition features projects that explore various intersections of ecology and feminism, ranging from site-specific investigations to personal experiences. The exhibition was initiated during an artist book workshop facilitated by paula roush, which Filmverkstaden organized a year ago, and includes works by Janika Herlevi, Tatiyas Filippova, Patricia Rodas, paula roush and Maria Ångerman. The exhibition is part of the The Silver Record Festival in Vaasa, featuring workshops, screenings, performances and presentations. https://www.filmverkstaden.fi/events A special thanks to the funders @kulturfonden and @harryschaumansstiftelse , and to @platform for hosting us. The exhibition can be seen this weekend, 12-16. /exhibition Photos: Padraig Crooke @paularoush @tatiyas___ @patriciarodas.photo @janika1569
