Οι συνθέσεις θα είναι σε tālas Tīntāl, Jhaaptāl, and Ektāl.
Hania Luthufi – Ragas & Talas as a basis for improvisation
In this seminar, we will study and practice raga compositions in order to develop a practical, experiential understanding of how a rāga is explored and presented. Participants will learn rāga palṭās—systematic melodic motifs that articulate rāga grammar and provide material for improvisation.
The compositions will be set in the tālas Tīntāl, Jhaaptāl, and Ektāl. Using material from both the compositions and palṭās, we will develop simple and precise methods for improvising within a tāla, with attention to laya (tempo) and phrasing.
After spending time working within each rāga, participants will compose their own material using the concepts explored in the course.
The seminar concerns singers (voice) without excluding musicians (instruments).
The seminar will be taught in the keys A and G.

Not feeling colourful today bc of the escalation of insanity we’ve all been witnessing in the last so many weeks, months, years. I worry about my friends in the skies and friends stuck somewhere bc of cancelled flights. I mourn for those who are mourning and I yearn for better and safer days for all of us, today is Holi and sharing this video from a colourful day to remind us all to be colourful and keep on loving, singing, dancing, drumming despite it all. Mehrangarh Fort, Jodhpur
A Tillang-ish improvisation in collaboration with @axel00moon which we showcased as “samudram” at the @citedesartsparis auditorium during my residency there a few summers ago. The reason I didn’t post this earlier was because of the terrible sound quality but the video brings up so many memories. Anyway messier sound is more welcome in this AI situation we we live in so here we are.
visuals by me, applied by @haidary_zainab 🤍
wearing @arabyarsathfurkhan@axel00moon what happened to releasing some of these recordings?
Missing the siblings. This photo was taken on the day sibling 1 @zewl_ took an oath to be an attorney-at-law at the supreme high court of Ilankai. We were all very proud of him that day. It was also when sibling 2 @hasnaloof was going through a tiny harami phase (much to my delight). She is going to call me and yell at me and ask me to take this post down but I won’t.
More wind than voice but you can hear a little Hamsadhwani Riyaz when we paused for sunset during a Raga sangeet workshop in the mountains of Anogiea last summer hosted by the wonderful @musiclabyrinth community in Crete.
I’m excited to share with you that I’ll be returning to Choudetsi this spring to give another workshop. From the 26th of March to the 31st we will be working on “Ragas and Talas as a basis for improvisation” . You’ll see more details on @musiclabyrinth ’s pages and website.
We are so excited to share The Ekard Residency’s fourth publication, created in honor of @bhashaalways ’s and @marhanlu ’s residency.
With heartfelt thanks to @marioashleydsouza and @rosad1985 for their beautiful texts. We are grateful they were able to spend a few days with us at the residency—writing about a process, a feeling, a collaboration is never an easy task, and they approached it with great insight and care.
This publication stands as an inspiring record of an extraordinary residency period, filled with memories, conversations, and intimate sharings.

Found this little excerpt of a Saraswathi Bhajan tuned to Raga Khammaj in madhya Jhaaptaal (10/8). Here I’m repeating the first line to lure @ciromontanari79 in to his solo. For a brief while here we exchange roles. Both myself and @efren.lopez.sanz become his accompanists by singing/playing the first line on repeat, which then becomes his meter and ground for his explorations of the taal.
It’s a pity you can’t see his fingers here, or his face. It’s really his moment, not mine :) the exquisite Robab you hear is none other than @efren.lopez.sanz who has a wonderful face too, I promise!
