To reiterate: NOT if, but HOW. Classical music organizations DO NOT OPERATE OUTSIDE OF AMERICAN CULTURE. Our precious Orchestra & Opera companies are not magically separate from the structures and systems of the “outside world”. White supremacy poisons every culture there is on this Earth, by design. There is violence happening inside our organizations, and that is DIRECTLY RELATED to the violence outside of our concert halls. This is not subject to debate. Figure out where it is, and deal with it. Our colleagues of color are tired. They are tired of screaming at us. They cannot afford to wait around while we do our fragile-a** white hand-wringing, and they are beyond sick of our empty words. How many more people have to die before we take responsibility for our complicity?

It’s an important reminder for me 1) to be patient and trust myself, even when it doesn’t feel like I’m “getting anywhere”, and 2) that we never know as much as we think we do about where others are coming from. I’ve been reading lately about all of the devastating ways that we as white women have failed our Black and Brown sisters, and to that I say, “No more!” We must lift our voices and raise each other up so that ALL women have the opportunity to realize their dreams.
