When function disappears, what’s left?
After attending Marc Leschelier’s guest lecture at Polimoda and experiencing his Pitti Uomo 109 installation, Fashion Marketing Management student Alara Arslan asks a question many creatives avoid:
Do we really know what to do with freedom once we have it?
No clear path, no explanation, no immediate meaning — just space that forces you to decide how to move, how long to stay, what it means (or if it means anything at all).
In her article, Alara reflects on:
» Creativity without utility
» Architecture and fashion as experience, not solution
» Uncertainty as a productive, human state
We want to hear from you:
» Should creative work always be “useful”?
» Is uncertainty something to fix — or explore?
» Can not knowing yet be the most honest place to start?

Yesterday, we kicked off Pitti Uomo 109 with a fascinating guest lecture, “Shifting Identities: Art, Movement, and the Self” by artist, and author of the fair’s main installation this year, Marc Leschelier.
The lecture, moderated by Maria Stanchieri of nss magazine, covered themes such as architecture as an inherited choice, building as a performative act, architecture as resistance, and the inspiration behind his current site specific work at Pitti Uomo, “Ancient/New Site”.
Thank you to all students and guests who attended, starting the Pitti Uomo 109 season at Polimoda and contributing to a beautiful and stimulating conversation at the heart of our school.
See you on Thursday 15 January at 10am for the next guest lecture in our series, Hed Mayner, “The Moving Silhouette: Fashion as a Living Form”.
