"I think in a way a lot of problems we encounter in our lives come from this big theme of the construction of masculinity." Marc Bauer talks about his project FEAR RAGE DESIRE. STILL STANDING on view until May 2, 2027 at Neubau. The Kunstmuseum Basel presents a project by the internationally renowned Swiss artist @marcbauer (b. 1975). Bauer’s drawings grapple with history, memory, gender, and identity from a queer perspective. Titled MARC BAUER. FEAR RAGE DESIRE. STILL STANDING, the presentation intertwines motifs from art history, from artists such as Hieronymus Bosch (ca. 1450-1516) and Nasta Rojc (1883-1964), with photographs from the internet and archival material. Bauer’s work focuses on the construction of masculinity and the violence it unleashes in society and—that is the central theme in this project—against queer people in particular. Tracing a long arc from history to the present, he reveals how deeply entrenched such violence is in social structures. Aujourd’hui nous avons le plaisir d’accueillir ⚡@marcbauer ⚡à l’EDHEA, où il rencontrera les étudiantes et étudiants de Bachelor 2–3 pour une masterclass, suivie d’une visite informelle de leurs ateliers. 🧰 Artiste suisse, Marc Bauer vit et travaille entre Zurich et Berlin. Son travail, qui déploie le dessin bien au-delà de ses formes les plus classiques, s’étend aussi à la peinture, à la sculpture, à l’installation et au film d’animation. A travers une pratique nourrie par la recherche, il explore des questions liées à l’histoire, à la mémoire, à l’identité, au genre, ainsi qu’aux liens entre violence, sexualité et représentations sociales. Prima di arrivare a “The First Homosexuals”, i visitatori e le visitatrici passano attraverso un’ala di collegamento del Kunstmuseum Basel che ospita la mostra “Fear Rage Desire. Still Standing” di Marc Bauer. Si comprende immediatamente che il fulcro della riflessione sono i corpi, il potere, la violenza e il prezzo che alcuni sono costretti a pagare. È un’esposizione che non fa sconti: parla di maschilità, ma soprattutto di quanto questa costruzione sociale possa essere violenta, ossessiva, fragile. E sì, di quanto spesso quella violenza ricada sui corpi queer. Le pareti sono piene di disegni realizzati direttamente in loco, fatti a mano, stratificati, cancellati, rifatti. Non c’è effetto “opera finita”: c’è piuttosto un continuo lavorìo, quasi nervoso. Niente è stabile, niente è definitivo. E infatti, a fine mostra, tutto sparisce. Casuale? Non proprio. Le immagini queer sono sempre state trattate così: visibili per un attimo, poi cancellabili. Bauer mescola Hieronymus Bosch, Nasta Rojc, archivi, internet. Ne esce un immaginario dove desiderio e violenza stanno sempre troppo vicini. Il dialogo con “The First Homosexuals” e con Jonathan D. Katz è chiaro: non basta chiedersi quando nasciamo. Bisogna chiedersi cosa succede dopo. E poi quel titolo: Still Standing. Come “I’m Still Standing” di Elton John. Non una colonna sonora trionfale, ma una battuta detta a denti stretti: sono ancora in piedi, sì, ma guarda a che prezzo?

Bauer’s works are based on extensive research: he reads academic literature, delves into archives, and talks to scholars and experts. One of his interlocutors has been Jonathan D. Katz, who organized, researched, and curated the exhibition The First Homosexuals. Fear Rage Desire, Still Standing” at the Kunstmuseum Basel. Swiss artist Marc Bauer transforms the museum’s walls into powerful mural drawings that explore masculinity, violence, and queer identity. Drawing inspiration from art history—echoing figures like Hieronymus Bosch and Nasta Rojc—and combining them with archival material and images from the internet, Bauer creates a deeply personal visual universe that invites reflection on how violence against queer communities has been embedded in social structures across time. Created directly on the museum’s walls and destined to disappear after the exhibition, the murals highlight the fragile yet urgent nature of memory. Visitors can even witness Bauer drawing live in the space throughout the exhibition. Bauer was invited to create this work on occasion of the exhibition The First Homosexuals. History, memory, identity and gender, the connections between violence, religion and sexuality and migration are major themes in Marc Bauer’s work that consists for a major part of black and white drawings, but extends to animation film, ceramics, oil painting and sculpture. He studied at the Ecole Supérieure d’Arts Visuels Genève (now HEAD) and at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam. On the basis of an intensive research, often in collaboration with outside specialists (musicians, philosophers, authors, scientists), Bauer develops work that range from intimate sets of drawings, to large-scale, space-filling installations that can include many media like wall drawing, work on paper, animation, sound. @marcbauer #marcbauer @msf_fr @aerzteohnegrenzen #100artistsforgaza

Drawing on sources from family photographs to ancient sculpture, Bauer constructs layered, non-linear narratives that ask how we make sense of history and identity through images. Tattoos, classical fragments, and fleeting moments of joy form a vocabulary of resilience—tracing the endurance of the human spirit and the need for spaces of liberation. Artiste pluridisciplinaire, Marc se réalise particulièrement dans le médium du dessin. Il les conçoit comme une forme d’archéologie, creusant le passé afin de faire remonter à la surface des éléments de notre inconscient. Le point de départ de son travail porte sur la mémoire. Depuis une vingtaine d’années, il se fascine pour la thématique de l’île, portant à la fois sur le refuge et un emprisonnement potentiel, tel un paradis qui pourrait se refermer sur lui-même. Pour l’un des dessins de l’exposition, il s’est directement inspiré de Solaris, film de 1972 d’Andreï Tarkovski, dont le sujet porte sur une planète entièrement habitée par un océan où les souvenirs deviennent réalité. Marc s’est passionné pour cette île comme métaphore de tout ce que l’on a perdu, mélange d’utopie, de transfert des désirs et d’illusion. Mais est-ce bien un subterfuge si la sensation du sentiment se révèle réelle ? S’il peut travailler le plus souvent en noir et blanc, ce dessin enrichi de lavis de peinture à l’huile accompagne le propos par des couleurs quelque peu surnaturelles elles-aussi, sorte de vision ou de rêve éveillé. D’autres œuvres de l’exposition se réfèrent à des paysages marins agitées, bousculés, comme s’ils étaient appréhendés d’un bateau laissant ressentir les différents états de la mer, tout comme la possibilité d’une île au loin, source de projection d’une vie meilleure pour de nombreux migrants.
