Throwing a double walled vase with porcelain clay for the first time! After practicing all those 3kg cylinders, 2kg double walled vase felt so much easier 😂

Week 6: Today I got to throw eight of 3kg cylinders and one double walled vase. Finally feels like I got the hang of getting a clean perpendicular interior lines of cylinders. Slowly getting there 💪🏻

Week 5: It’s been three weeks since I got to practice 3kg cylinders last time. I don’t know if it was the long break, but I definitely struggled to pull the walls and get much height.
The tallest cylinders were 39cm which wasn’t too bad but I wasn’t too happy with interior lines- The base was very messy and not as flat as I wanted, so it doesn’t matter I can get the height if the form is not what I want. I also couldn’t pull the clay at the very bottom even though it was very thick.
What am I doing wrong? 🤔
1. I am pushing in too hard from the outside hand when pulling which causes the cylinders to go wonky and twisted.
2. I couldn’t keep my left elbow straight up and so I kept pushing the rim while pulling the wall which made the cylinders to go wonky.
3. I tend to rush when working on where the base and the wall meet and move up too quick- this is why I end up with thick wall at the bottom.
Can my body please do what I tell them to do? And also can my mind please be quiet when I am throwing so I can focus? 🙄😂
Ah well, I will just keep trying 💪🏻🧘😁

Week 4: Threw five of 3kg cylinders. Three out of five made it to 40cm height cylinders 🥹🥹🥹
Yay 🙌🏻

Week 3 : Practiced eight of 3kg cylinders today. The tallest cylinders I made were 35.5cm. Yay! 🙌🏻
A couple of tips from @studio_mistyisland that really helped are
1. Open up the base a lot wider than the size that you want to end up with, then grab the exterior of the cylinder with two cup hands from the bottom of the cylinder to make the cylinder tall and skinny before your first pull.
2. Don’t push in hard from outside hand when pulling. Focus more on squeezing with the thumb and middle finger.
💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻

Week 2 : Practicing 3kg ish cylinders. It definitely feels better than last week, but still feels like I am wrestling with rock hard porcelain clay in the beginning 😅 Then the clay gets softer so quick as soon as I use a little too much water. Apparently I keep leaning my left arm to the left which I didn’t realise. Thanks to @studio_mistyisland for keeping pointing out to me while I throw.
The best height of cylinder was 33cm this week. The goal is to get to 40cm.

New year and new challenge!
I am trying a Korean pulling technique for a change this year. I think it would be a good challenge for me to improve my throwing techniques in general.
I usually use a sponge or knuckle outside to pull and It’s really hard to not go back to old habits as I am struggling with this new hand placement.
In this video I am throwing with porcelain which I am not used to throw with. I really enjoyed using it as it’s very smooth and easy on my skin although I struggled with shaping a moon jar at the end. It’s definitely harder than shaping stoneware clay.
I want to continue practicing this pulling technique until I can make 35cm cylinder with 2kg clay. 💪🏻

@sydneyceramicsmarket is only a week away 😱😍🥳
I have been trying different things this year. I thought I would share what I have been doing and update you on the new materials and design that I have been working with.
1. Red clay
I have been looking for a really red clay and tried Clayworks Mahogany clay for the first time this year. It maintains such a beautiful and strong red brown color even after glaze firing. I love clay body so much that I tend to glaze only inside vessels. I have made different shapes of double walled vases and goblets with this clay and can’t wait to bring them @sydneyceramicsmarket
2. Satin Glaze and Glossy pink glaze
I have developed some new glazes that I am very happy with! I have been looking for a stables Satin glaze that works well with different oxides to create beautiful colours and I found one!!
This new pink glaze that I developed is something else! On white clay body, it comes out subtle and soft pink color, and on buff/red clay body it comes out in a different shades of pink or purple or sometimes even blue.
3. New shapes and designs
Goblets with face profile silhouette on the stems, face profile silhouette cups&keep cups(although not many left as they were most popular items @bigdesignmarket ), and Dokkaebi jars.
If you don’t know what Dokkaebi is…..
Dokkaebi (Korean: 도깨비) are legendary creatures from Korean mythology and folklore. Dokkaebi, also known as “Korean ogres”, are nature deities or spirits possessing extraordinary powers and abilities that are used to interact with humans, at times playing tricks on them and at times helping them. Dokkaebi are believed to be defenders against evil spirits, acting as a form of protection and a symbol of good luck.
I can’t wait to show what I have been working on @sydneyceramicsmarket next week.
