CHARAS: From Domes to El Bohio will air at 5pm EDT/10pm BST tonight on @montezpressradio . In this show I chat to artist Matthew Mottel about CHARAS, an East Village/Lower East Side neighbourhood organization and community hub, originating in the late 60’s by a group of ex gang members. We delve into the 25 year battle for the old ps 64 building that CHARAS once occupied, as well as their legacy for alternative technologies and community architecture. Mottel’s father, Syeus Mottel, was a theatrical activist and photographer, who published the photo-journalism book, CHARAS THE IMPROBABLE DOME BUILDERS, which documented CHARAS’s early work with geodesic domes and alternative housing with the architect R. Buckminster Fuller. The book has been re-published and you can find a link below.
The end of the show features a recording of Syeus Mottel discussing CHARAS in 2010, and then excerpts from an archival interview between Chino Garcia, one of the original founding members of CHARAS, and Syeus himself in 1972/73.
