Henry:
I’m an immigrant several times over. I was born in Hong Kong, grew up in New Zealand, moved to North Carolina for college, and then to New York eight years ago. Every time someone asks me where home is, I stumble and hesitate.
Chinatown used to be a home away from home when I first arrived in the city, but now it’s become a home in itself. It’s helped me stay grounded in my Chinese heritage from catching up with my optometrist in Cantonese to eating at my favourite restaurants that remind me of home. No one could do fried chicken wings like my grandmother did, but the ones in Chinatown are pretty darn close.
Everywhere else in the city, I feel like I’ve had to translate some part of myself just to fit in, but here, the static of being an “immigrant several times over” goes quiet.
I can just show up and belong.
