When I got my first publication last year I knew the SKY WAS THE LIMIT. I said oh we are going BIG and NOT going home this year. I said I WILL make it to Vogue without any idea how I was going to get there. Being kind, patient, loving and supportive will always take you places money won’t. So many of you watching this inspire me, your words push me to keep going. Only the Lord knows my testimony and my journey to get here. One day the entire world will know but this was NOT an easy path at all. From working in fast food at 17, working THREE jobs from 18-21, trying to live someone else’s dream. I finally stood up and started to live mine and that was the best decision I’ve ever made. Trust God, trust his timing, listen and learn from your experiences. The crowd will scream my name. “Whatever is meant for you will just happen” that’s the mindset I started NYFW with. After attending over 30 castings, getting there at the crack of dawn, and sitting in 20° weather with my chair and blanket, it all paid off. Being a petite model we get overlooked in runway all the time especially during NYFW. I told myself that I will show up regardless of the height requirements and the stigma. Even if I just got seen that’s still a foot in the door. I patiently waited 3 hours being a backup model not even knowing if I was going to walk in the show or not. Once I got told 10 minutes before the show to get ready I knew this was my chance to show out and that I did. I’m a representation for my petite models, for my black women, for children with a dream, that it only takes ONE person to believe in yourself and that is YOURSELF. I’ve had so many people tell me “you’re just not tall enough, not skinny enough, not pretty enough. I’m here to show you that I’m MORE than enough. I loved not only Melanie’s designs but her message behind being a strong powerful black woman and the dedication to her mother.
