Onshore conditions - a restorative home and dune ecology.
Following our work at Alba Thermal Springs, we’ve been delighted to have clients approach us to help restore nearby coastal landscapes and design their gardens and pools.
This house and freshwater pool are carefully sited into a steep slope, stabilising eroded primary dunes and buffering prevailing ocean winds.
Endemic plants propagated from surrounding coastal shrub will rebuild the ecology over time whilst defining a series of seasonal garden terraces.
Looking forward to bringing this one to life.

Portsea’s iconic front beach is gone — and it isn’t coming back.
But what if, instead of sandbags, we created thriving sea baths?
What if, instead of accelerating marine erosion, we protected and restored critical aquatic ecologies?
What if a dilapidated park became a world-class waterfront?
What if we could re-establish lost connections to a once-iconic holiday destination?
Is this the only solution? No.
But it’s a starting point — and a conversation we urgently need to have.

The loss of Portsea front beach cannot be solved with sandbags. There are social, environmental and financial opportunities in finding another long term solution.
Portsea’s iconic front beach was progressively eroded and ultimately disappeared following the commencement of dredging in Port Phillip Bay in 2008. After several unsuccessful attempts to re-establish the beach, a “temporary” seawall constructed of sandbags was installed in 2010. More than a decade later, this measure has effectively become a permanent solution to protect the foreshore from storm surges, waves, tides, and winds.
However, according to some experts, it is likely that the construction of the sandbag retaining wall is exacerbating the problem, further eroding the beach in front of the wall and preventing any natural recovery. The impacts are not only environmental. Poor visual amenity, the loss of recreational assets, and a downturn in local retail activity have contributed to a fractured sense of place and history, as well as a loss of community confidence in authorities.
In response, Mala has proposed a master vision that integrates environmental, financial, and social considerations to unlock a range of new opportunities, including public sea baths, a health and wellness centre, a dive school, a new public promenade, and a neighbourhood park.

Two years after opening the layered gardens at @albathermalsprings are slowly starting to take shape. In those early days we were often asked “where are all the plants?” Landscapes take time to establish and are constantly evolving. We set the initial conditions with a great deal of care but ultimately hand over the next chapters. We were fortunate to have such a great client who had faith in our long term vision for the project.
Swipe right to see the gardens in November 2022 shortly after installation.
