Ignorance is Bliss is a continuous research-based design project that transforms industrial waste and secondary materials into high-value ceramic surfaces for interior and exterior use. By rethinking the role of discarded matter, the project proposes a more responsible and poetic approach to material production within the built environment.

Stone Waste is Bliss, a ceramic tiles project, is the winner of the crQlr Award 🏆🍾. crQlr (pronounced “circular”) is a global consortium that connects and empowers diverse players working towards a circular economy.
Stone Waste is Bliss repurposes discarded stone 🪨 into functional ceramic surfaces, reducing waste ♻️, mining demand ⛏️, and chemical use 🧪, while introducing unique aesthetics. In collaboration with Akmenstata 🤝.

Born from GLOST glaze’s material research interviews 🎤✍️, and founder Elena Gileva’s decades-long investigation into ceramics, the exhibition presents geological specimens, material experiments, and ceramic works that reveal the complex relationship between earth 🌍, chemistry 🧪, and form 🎨.

Biofuel Waste is Bliss🌱🔥 transforms industrial biofuel ash waste into sustainable ceramic surfaces, offering an alternative to conventional glazes and clay compositions. Developed by designer Agne Kucerenkaite in collaboration with environmental scientist Marija Spokaite, the project works with the Vilnius Heat Plant 🏭, which generates around 460 tonnes of wood ash waste per month, much of posing significant disposal challenges🗑️. By incorporating up to 55% ash into ceramic glazes and clay bodies, the project reduces the need for newly extracted raw materials🌍 while exploring circular approaches to waste repurposing♻️.

Drinking water supply industries, which produce thousands of tonnes of residue per year, are the main suppliers of iron byproduct for Ignorance is Bliss projects ♻️. The substance is resulting from the production of drinking water from ferrous groundwater and surface water🚰. It consists primarily of iron oxide and small amounts of other metals, minerals and organic materials 💎🌿. Iron removal is carried out by oxidation and filtration.
The photo shows ferrous water running through the metal ‘comb’ 🪮💦. This way, water receives oxygen following iron separation.

Agne Kucerenkaite (@agne.kucerenkaite ) is the designer behind Make Waste Matter (@makewastematter ), an initiative that transforms industrial waste into innovative materials, creating sustainable solutions for the future of design. Originally from Lithuania, she works with ceramics, glass, textiles, and other discarded materials, reimagining the potential of waste while exploring themes of sustainability and circular economies.
In this interview, she shares her journey and insights on how to rethink the use of resources to address climate change and industrial pollution.
Blooming mustard 🌼. Agricultural industries are the main suppliers of botanical waste for the Ignorance is Bliss projects. The Lithuanian partner, Forest Energija, grows and processes various agricultural plants, producing edible oils 🌱. The company supplies mustard leftovers after mechanically extracting oils from the seeds. Ongoing research is exploring the use of mustard waste among others as a biocomposite ingredient 🧪♻️.
