dale, formally known as ELAD, has been my longest professional relationship to date. this however is a special case because we happen to also be the bestest of friends. with every idea comes our unison and it truly is remarkable to have someone that views creation in the same perspective. a decade of anything takes true commitment; no matter what it is you must be truly invested emotionally and physically to actively keep something going for that long. dale has a patchwork prominence throughout his work. when he first began it was this fresh act in giving something another life that strengthened the overall attraction. what was once expired, transformed to an everlasting future. everything must end, but it ends in evolution, that is the expired citizens’ mission— a decade of Dale. pt. 1 of the elad article on dreamsanddrafts.com

I often feel like my projects are so personal– like I have turned myself inside out during the process of creation. When people tell me that my work looks good I struggle to believe it because I am looking at the guts and bones of my art when they see soft, blushing skin. Working on collaborative projects this year has forced me to really figure out why I keep hiding in this figurative body of art. Maybe because its comfortable, like I’ve spent so much of my time seeking shelter from being perceived. But I am learning that as an artist and a human, although I feel like those two things are just as much one as the other– what I create, what I produce, how I am productive and what I use my time to do is not equal to who I am and what I am valued at. When you detach yourself from that idea, its easier to step out of that body and view yourself as this person who is ever changing, ever learning, and ever growing. Self love becomes a habit in tandem to creating art and that has been one of the most beautiful lessons I’ve learned this past year.
Imaginal closes off the show with a fantastical look that is both eccentric and sophisticated at the same time. Dedicating this look to my mother’s heritage and the women who introduced me to the world of manicures, I found much comfort in the ability to combine culture, taste, and chicness in efforts to mix generations of impressionable charm.

After overexerting myself in the first quarter of the year, I was struggling to find ways to recharge. I was starving and aching for the act of creating, but I was so unimaginably exhausted. In search of something familiar and something with depth– almost like a metaphorical home to return to, I thought about what it was like to not have a full understanding of time, who I was when creating art used to feel as easy as breathing, and when I wasn’t afraid of being perceived or how things would turn out on the other end. I went to my mind palace and traced back my footsteps to when I was seventeen and appeared outside one of my childhood homes in San Antonio, Texas. I was in the green, micro forest of the backyard, looking up at the room on the right of the second story brick house. Through the window I could see a girl wildly dancing around, blasting a song from SZA’s Ctrl album.
Ctrl is a cold kiss on the forehead from teenager you. With their tiny hands on your shoulders, they whisper to you, “Take your time. Remember me always. I’m rooting for you. I love you. You’re so cool.” This look reflects the bubbly and crafty details of my childhood personalities while reconnecting myself with my sense of purpose and my long lost whimsy.
