It’s a tough gig, but we’re hanging in, thanks 🙄
Portland — you are everything. You are majestic, and beautiful, and delicious, and quirky.
But more than that— you are a city of civically minded, creative and empowered humans. You are honest and vulnerable and yes, imperfect, but always growing and shifting and trying to do better.
To us, you’re home. And we wouldn’t have it any other way.
Last week we quietly celebrated 3 years in business 🎉
It ends up that each year gets harder and harder to take time to celebrate as autumn is the beginning of our true busy season. A problem that we are oh so grateful for!
But we would be remiss if we didn’t thank all of our amazing workshop leaders and artists that make Makerspace what it is today! So, thank you!!
To date, we have run 795 hours of workshops with 36 workshop leaders and teachers 🤯
And of course, thank you to the 1,944 of you that have taken workshops here at Makerspace Sellwood! YOU are our amazing community of makers and we are here because of the magic you bring every week✨ Cheers to you!🥂
xo,

Hi, Mackenzie here!
Can I let you in on a little secret… for someone that owns and runs a workshop space, I’m not much of a workshop person. Not because I don’t think they’re an incredibly valuable form of community and self-care/growth, but because I’m really bad at being brand new at something and because of that, it’s hard for it to be an activity that gets me to a more centered, relaxed place. Sound a little like you?
May I suggest: Beeswax Taper Candles
While absolutely skill building, this workshop is a complete delight— it’s very mediative and soothing, and also kind of beautifully community building as everyone walks in circles around the workshop table dipping their candles when they get to the pot of beeswax. The smell is unreal. The vibes are pretty much perfect.
Join us for our next one: Sunday, June 28th with @shopwhobyfire | $115 gets you three sets of taper candles (6 total), a drink of choice and the most restorative afternoon.
Treat yourself 🐝🕯️

In solidarity, yes—but also as a reflection of who we are: a business built by women and mothers who believe that rest, family, and well-being are not luxuries—they’re non-negotiable.
Choosing to close is choosing people over profit. It’s choosing to model a different way of working and living, even when it’s not the easiest path. This is a challenging time for small businesses. What lasts will be shaped by where we place our support.
If you believe in community-rooted spaces, in care over burnout, in people-first economies— this is the moment to show it. Shop small, local and obscure.
We’ll see you for a connective weekend of making 💪🏼
