Great designers posses a natural curiosity and often it goes beyond the brief. We want to give a huge shout-out to @BOLTGROUP ’s own, D’Van Howard (@dvan_design ), who recently earned a top 10 finalist spot in Makelab 3D’s national design competition at the Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA) IDC conference in Detroit, MI.     Using less than 1.5 spools of filament, his LAP Stool concept was inspired by the strength of early automotive prototyping lap-joints and is able to support adult body weight. All while being designed to ship flat-pack. At BOLTGROUP, we’re continually inspired by his curiosity and passion to innovate even outside the brief! It’s been a week since IDC and wow this year was something else. I’ve been to Detroit a number of times but the spirit of the city really came through. Something about the city reminds me of Brooklyn a number of years ago. It was a whirlwind of a week, we got in on Sunday and left the following Sunday. We design and printed our own trade show booth, spending less than $500 in hard costs on the booth and setting up and taking it down in less than 1 hour each. I think seeing it come to life was one of the best feelings because we had visions of this beauty meets function sort of thing for months, and we saw it come to life during set up. We prepared a booth giveaway item to really activate the crowd, something that gets the conversation going. Something that creates some sort of level of vitality within the event. So @mannyjmota designed and printed keyboard lamps that fold together into a nice cute pyramid. You twist the top to turn the light on and off. They were going so fast we had to cap it at 25 per day. And we had also prepared attendee gift bag items. We design engineered a coaster bottle opener. Again 3D printed with other hardware components. We didn’t assemble it so that they would be fun little kits. We know industrial designers love moments where we get to work with our hands a bit. On the @idsadesign Board of Directors side, we had a super product in person board meeting and kicked off the week with a Board dinner. I have so much respect for all my fellow Board Directors and it is always so fun seeing everything in person and really asking the tough questions. I even had a slot to MC the main stage on Day 3, where the dang teleprompter tripped me up a bit, but then I got my mojo and vibe back the other 3 times I went up. When I was a student at Pratt, @idsadesign had such a presence. It is now so great I get to be a part of this organization and help shape the future. It was all so great to see and so fun for me. Next year is in Pasadena as we head to the West Coast. Super excited!
