On May 19th at the Smart, Ellen Larson, Associate Director of the Center for the Art of East Asia, will moderate a conversation contemporary Chinese artists in Chicago. Featuring artists magicfeifei, Miao Wang, Linye Jiang, and gallerist Qiuchen Wu. -- Smart Salon: Contemporary Chinese Artists in Chicago Tuesday, May 19 5:00 - 6:30 pm at the Smart, 5550 S. Greenwood Ave. Chicago-based artists and cultural producers Magicfeifei, Linye Jiang, Miao Wang, and Qiuchen Wu join Center for the Arts of East Asia Associate Director Ellen Larson in conversation. Anchored in UChicago's long-standing role in shaping the study and exhibition of Chinese art, the discussion considers how artistic practices circulate between China and global institutions. Participants explore how artists and curators mobilize China not as a fixed geography, but as a critical lens that generates new ways of thinking across media, histories, and transnational networks. This program is presented in conjunction with "Beyond Boundaries: Three Decades of Contemporary Chinese Art at the Smart," and in collaboration with the Center for the Art of East Asia @uchicagocarteasia Free: RSVP is encouraged.

Some details of the work in my exhibition, Emancipation Park. The show is on view through 3/28. The gallery is open Tuesday through Saturday, 10 AM–6 PM. Address: SkyART, 3026 E 91st St, Chicago, IL ⋅˚₊‧ ୨୧ ‧₊˚ ⋅⋅˚₊‧ ୨୧ ‧₊˚ ⋅⋅˚₊‧ ୨୧ ‧₊˚ ⋅⋅˚₊‧ ୨୧ ‧₊˚ ⋅ Exhibition Text: Emancipation Park, a space with a deceptively monumental name in Wuhan, China, is a simple public space where elders gather to dance after dinner, where daily life quietly unfolds. Adopted from the deceptive title of the actual park, around where the artist grew up, this exhibition creates a Disneyland for the world of businessmen, a park where business men are animated and lured into a soft, cute, and willing trap. The danger is disguised, the surfaces are gentle. Unless you desire to reveal the wound, it is harmless. Subverting her childhood memories, Magicfeifei turns the child’s kick beneath a business dinner table, the girl’s discomfort of sitting among “powerful” men, and the artist’s situation of being doubted if she is capable of creating art into a space of her irony, entertainment, and eventually emancipation. These moments of past and present, of memories and the everyday are what compose this archive of the personal and the cultural. What the artist works to point out is this: it is just a park; you are allowed to enter; you are allowed to stay; you may even want to join the dance. Text by @onemorecig_ and @willpan_ Many thanks to @the_maya_nguyen for the help with the installation

☆*:.。. o(≧▽≦)o .。.:*☆ On 2/4 at @skyartnfp on Chicago’s South Side, I had the unforgettable experience of collaborating with four youth chefs, along with @kolks10 , to create FAMILY TABLE: HEARTH , a beautiful evening of food, music (@candyrockz_official ), art, and people. The most exciting part, something I had never experienced before, and still think is one of the coolest ideas an art organization could have was that they designed a FOUR-COURSE MENU inspired by MY WORK. Seeing the youth chefs and Chef Max bring so many ideas from my art into dishes was incredible. One of my favorite details was the pink bow-tie pasta they made, you can’t really see it in the photos, buttt!! And the lava cake with roasted marshmallows for dessert was also such a cool interpretation of my work. Thank you so much for @caseysmallwood who invited me for this opportunity thought the exhibition with family table: hearth at SkyART Here are two photos from the exhibition I will post more detail photos The exhibition is on view until 3/28. still two more weeks to see it! And thank you to my guest @ellen.larson for the photos, the companionship, the encouragement, and your kind heart. ♪(*^^)o∀*∀o(^^*)♪ Wearing @6jiang6 , jacket and skirt, Made from super 120 black wool self, with silk satin ruffles, lined with cotton broadcloth, and finished with mother-of-pearl buttons.

Join me at @skyartnfp on the south side of Chicago to celebrate my first solo exhibition. I will be showing new works alongside selected earlier pieces. The exhibition title, “Emancipation Park” is a direct translation of Jiefang Park(解放公园) in Wuhan, a park I visited sometimes while growing up. Opening Reception: Saturday, January 17, 4-7pm 3026 E. 91st Street, Chicago, IL, 60617 The exhibition is on view from Jan 17 - Mar 28, 2026 Exhibition poster by @a.d.foreal ❤️ Special thanks to my lovely parents and Dr.Zhou

Join us at the First Presbyterian Church of Chicago @chicagofirstchurch to celebrate the artists of “Altærity” with an opening event and fundraiser for the National Immigrant Justice Center. I will be showing some work inside and a one-night-only installation of “Tooth Gate” outside of the church. And with other beautiful works by so many other artists “Altærity,” combining “alter” and “altar,” creates room for artists of the East Asian Diaspora to express the folds of identities, histories, and spiritualities contained with the “other.” Through two-dimensional and sculptural works, the complex lived experiences of Asian Americans will be examined and opened for dialogue at the First Church of Chicago, a space that had significant Asian American membership in the early 1900s. “Altærity” will run from October 24th to November 28th. Curated by @nataliejankins and @veolenus Organized by @wyungfilms Event Administration by Max Li and Teddy Sandler Flyer by Ines Kang
