Witch and Glitch are nearly identical words and we’re just expected to believe that’s all just some kind of coincidence? Think about it.

To my wonderful cast and crew, what a truly spectacular experience. It was a true joy to be trusted by @theatrearcana to compose and musically direct ‘The Witch & the Whistleblower’ — it has been one of the great joys of my life. To work with absolute professionals, who also were caring and full of good humour — a wonderful little family of the best humans. To see everything develop from nothing to something exceptional, with critical and commercial success, is quite extraordinary.
With masterful writing, pinpoint direction, sensational producing, dynamic choreography, marvellous costume and design, expert stage management and performances that transcended each and every night — it was sheer magic.
Thank you @theglitch_se1 for hosting our show and to your wonderful staff for keeping us so well looked after.
To my dear friends and collaborators, I will be forever grateful for this experience and hold you all close in my heart.
The Witch and The Whistleblower 🤍
these people are an absolute dream. thank you a million times over. it’s been the most incredible experience to tell the true story of two women in their rights and their wrongs. honour of a lifetime to be a part of it.
@theatrearcana
And that’s a WRAP on ‘The Witch and The Whistleblower’ for now…
Thank you all from the bottom of our hearts for your support in making this show happen. Whether you supported us with kind words of support, financial backing or seeing the show, we see you and appreciate you so much. Some of you even came along for multiple trips to our town by the river! And to top it all off, being selected as the Offies Assessors Choice show is an accolade we are truly honoured to have.
This is not the end for our little new folk musical. We at Theatre Arcana are confident that this show has life beyond this run and cannot wait to see what is in store for the future. Keep your eyes peeled, as ‘there is something to fear…witches walk this land’…
As we all well know, making theatre in 2026 is no mean feat. We will be working hard behind the scenes, pedalling and paddling to make things happen.
In addition, we will be keeping our GoFundMe page open for donations; if you are invested in the future of this project, please do consider donating. If you are unable (understandable in this economy), then do ‘Pass It On’ to anyone and everyone - share it far and wide!

The year is 1597; a woman, accused of being a witch, can save herself by condemning others. A community is crumbling. A man plays god with a lie. A woman fights back with the truth. The fate of the town lies in the balance, but who will get the final word…the witch or the whistleblower?
In a time when gossip can kill, whispers become poisonous and speculation becomes a sentence. Well-respected widow Marion Walker, horrified at what is happening to her town, decides to expose the truth about the witchfinder John Cowper and his newest ‘weapon’: a self-proclaimed witch. Margaret Aitken, under the threat of death, claimed she could identify a witch by a mark on their eyes…so is transformed into the world’s first female witch-hunter. The fate of the town lies in the balance, but who will get the final word…the witch or the whistleblower?
Thank you to Simon Lane for the amazing photos!

JAKE DUFTON is... MUSIC DIRECTOR🎶
About Jake:
Jake Dufton is a multi-award-winning composer and filmmaker. He has written several musicals and musical films, such as A Surgeon’s Photograph (2018), Cabinet Dance (2019), and Every Waking Moment (2023), which won Best LGBTQ+ Film at the Manchester International Film Festival and was screened at BFI Flare 2023. He was also nominated for Best Score for The Devil’s Ball (2023) at the 48 Hour Film Project.
Jake has also seen success with his band, @thekidsinspacesuits , having won Best Music Video at the Cardiff Mini Film Festival, London Director Awards, and the Wrap Film Festival for Ace (or “I Wanna Be Like Sophie Aldred”) (2025). Their new album, Sound of the Engines, was released on March 1, 2026.
His compositions can be heard across many short films and online advertisements, such as the MUBI-selected Topos (2025). Jake has found it exhilarating to return to the musical theatre space to write and musically direct this show with such a talented and versatile cast and crew, and it has been a wonderful excuse to think pretentiously about melody, motifs, and all things musical.
The Witch & The Whistleblower is a new folk musical, inspired by the true story of Marion Walker and Margaret Aitken.
