Real talk: What I saw happening in that rehearsal room is not to be missed. These artists are putting themselves out there in a way that is deep and special and their perspective is critical for us to be discussing as artists and audiences. Their stories are intimate and specific but represent a broad community that has been excluded from far too many stories, rooms, roles, and casting considerations. But the narratives these performers are sharing go deeper and examine where cultural and societal influences present both limits and opportunities personally, professionally, and artistically. I admire their vulnerability and am moved by how their stories and performances reminded me why we at @yesandrva present this series and why I keep coming back to theatre as a touchstone and a North Star for connection and reflection. ⭐️ VOTE ⭐️ She would have wanted you to. My dear ol’ mum, Marcia Beth Roop, passed away on September 26th on a bright morning. Mom was an extremely strong woman. She was a force. Many people reminded me of that during her last days. She was intelligent, curious, literary. She was a re-reader and a re-watcher. She loved The Carter Family and Dylan and fiction and non-fiction and outer space and baseball. She was an Anglophile and a Francophile. She loved art and TV and film and ballet. I’ll never stop being grateful that I watched American Utopia with her at her insistence. She loved plays and musical theatre. Most of all she loved me and my sister and my dad with a devotion that was beyond description. She saw something in me as a child and knew she had to nurture my wildly artistic inclinations. She and Dad put me in ballet and piano and supported me when I wanted to do orchestra and choir. They didn’t just support me when I wanted to do theatre, they were THRILLED. They sent me to arts camps and theatre school and came to every single performance I ever did until the past couple of years. Many of you know that not all artists have the unbridled encouragement of their parents. It is a gift she gave me. She and Dad modeled the importance of doing your civic duty and making your voice heard through your vote. She was passionate about staying engaged in currents events and understanding the state of the nation. It became very hard to understand our nation these last few years. I believe she was exhausted and plagued by it. Her mail-in ballot for this week’s election arrived after she was beyond the point of being able to fill it out. It broke my heart that she couldn’t submit her vote this time. Please, IF YOU ARE ON THE FENCE ABOUT VOTING BUT ARE INCLINED TO SUPPORT THE DEMOCRATIC TICKET I ASK YOU TO MAKE UP FOR HER MISSING VOTE. Go to the polls on Tuesday.
