Meet the Exceptional Accessible ADU winner of the ADU Design Challenge: ADU for All by Kevin Marblestone, Paul Gruber, Sandra Jahnes, Will Ruhl and Josh Pisors of @ruhljahnes Architects of Watertown. This 500-square-foot, one-bedroom design centers accessibility without sacrificing livability. Judges were impressed by how the wheelchair-accessible layout minimizes circulation dead ends, creates a functional corridor and could work across many lot types in Massachusetts. Thanks to the Affordable Homes Act, ADUs under 900 square feet can now be built by right in single-family zoning districts across Massachusetts. ADU for All shows how these homes can help families plan for caregiving, aging in place and accessible living close to home. See all 92 ADU designs at www.mass.gov/ADUdesigns.

Something you don’t see every day on Boston City Hall Plaza: a fully built and furnished accessory dwelling unit. Stop by Saturday to take a look inside the ADU at @cityofboston ’s ADU Showcase and see how these small homes can help create more flexible, lower-cost housing options. Thanks to @backyard_adus for bringing this model ADU to the plaza and to Mayor Wu and @cityofboston for showcasing one way we can add more homes as the Healey-Driscoll Administration works to make it easier to build ADUs in communities across Massachusetts. Event details: The showcase runs through Sunday, May 17, with ADU tours from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and daily workshops at noon on designing, financing and permitting ADUs in Boston.

The Cape is beautiful. But for many workers and families, finding a year-round home is getting harder. Secretary Juana Matias toured Truro, Wellfleet and Dennis this week highlighting local solutions that are creating more affordable homes for Cape Cod communities.

Earlier today Secretary Matias met with the Massachusetts Association for Community Action (MASSCAP) to discuss their anti-poverty agenda and learn more about how Community Action Agencies across Massachusetts are using HLC's CSBG and HEAP programs to support the Commonwealth's most vulnerable residents.

Meet the Exceptional Sustainable ADU winner of the ADU Design Challenge: The 20 Foot House by J.R. Coffin, Chris Brooks and Charles Mesias of @studiodenden of Belmont. This 495-square-foot, one-bedroom design includes loft space and a compact 24-by-22-foot footprint. Judges highlighted its strong thermal design, energy efficiency and potential to fit within the footprint of many historic garages across Massachusetts. The Affordable Homes Act made ADUs under 900 square feet legal by right in single-family zoning districts statewide. The 20 Foot House shows how families can create new housing options on land they already have, while prioritizing energy efficiency and neighborhood-scale design. Across the Cape, one in 10 homes is now a short-term rental and another quarter are used only seasonally or occasionally. That puts real pressure on workers, schools, local businesses and families who have called these communities home for generations. Today we visited a @habitatforhumanity project in in Dennis to congratulate the town and the Town of Brewster for receiving Seasonal Community designations - giving them access to new tools and exclusive grants to create more housing for local residents.

Secretary Matias just finished joining local leaders and partners in Wellfleet to celebrate the opening of The Residences at Lawrence Hill. The project is the largest housing development ever built in Wellfleet and will more than double the number of affordable homes in town. That’s 46 affordable homes for families and individuals across a range of incomes, helping year-round residents and workers stay rooted in the community they know and love. HLC was proud to support this work with more than $12 million in grants and tax credits, alongside the town of Wellfleet, Community Development Partnership, Preservation of Affordable Housing and local partners.

"I was glad to meet with the Mass Union of Public Housing Tenants earlier today to discuss their advocacy agenda on behalf of the more than 80,000 Massachusetts residents who call public housing home. This Administration has made significant investments to improve the quality, accessibility and sustainability of the public housing system and we look forward to continued partnership with Mass Union." -Secretary Juana B. Matias

Meet the Exceptional Standard ADU winner of the ADU Design Challenge: Sunlit Haven by Yiren Weng of Sharon. This 785-square-foot, one-bedroom design includes a den and outdoor deck, creating room for flexibility within a standard ADU footprint. Judges praised the open entry, central flex space, clear graphics and cost-effectiveness. Under the Affordable Homes Act, ADUs under 900 square feet can now be built by right in single-family zoning districts statewide. Sunlit Haven shows how that flexibility can help families create homes that support changing household needs while making better use of existing residential lots. Meet the Exceptional Compact ADU winner of the ADU Design Challenge: Bower:A by Michelle Oullette of @woolfall.llc of Lowell. At 450 square feet, this one-bedroom design uses a simple rectangular form to make compact living feel flexible and practical. Judges noted the design’s ability to expand over time, offering homeowners options to adapt the unit as needs change. The Affordable Homes Act made ADUs under 900 square feet legal by right in single-family zoning districts across Massachusetts. Bower:A is a strong example of how a smaller home can give families room to respond to changing needs, whether that means supporting relatives, caregivers or future residents. Preserving a historic landmark while creating meaningful impact for veterans is what progress looks like. Earlier this week, HLC announced the redevelopment of the former armory into 52 units of permanent supportive housing for veterans — creating safe, stable homes right here in Lynn. At EOVS, we know that housing is foundational — and we remain committed to making sure Massachusetts veterans have not just a place to live, but the support to build their next chapter.
