We had a month to write, shoot, edit and deliver a short comedy film, made by and starring women. Ours just happens to be about depression.
Already hilarious, see? We also decided to film it largely in an elevator (but also somehow outdoors on a rooftop in February?), an unhinged choice for a first-time director that you have to just laugh at. But we pulled it off (and it looks gorgeous thanks to our stunning cinematographer Christina) and only because we had the raddest, kindest, funniest crew known to womankind. Thank you @firecrackerdept and @canfilmfest for the amazing opportunity to platform the incredible Canadian female artists from across the country.

ACTRA’s newest 🙋♀️✨
Canada has been so good to me, but it hasn’t always been easy as an outsider…I moved countries during a pandemic, and the industry was abismal…and when things finally opened back up, I realized that my work permit was only good for nonunion work. Another set back. But I made the best of it, working on some pretty cool shorts and nonunion features. Another year later, I married my longtime Canadian sweetheart and months after that my Permanent Residency card came in the mail and I was finally READY to work union!! And then, that same month, the strikes started…just my luck. But I pushed on! I started my own production company @screaminggoatfilms and created my own projects to supplement the lack of work going around. I even went back to my theater roots starring in a play at @thekingblackbox and then later, finally securing my first ACTRA credit to join as an apprentice member!
The next part moved quicker, and has been full of its own new challenges and excitements. But joining ACTRA as a Full Member has felt like a long time coming, and the point of my post is just to say, never give up. All the work you put in will lead you exactly where you need to be, at exactly the time it’s meant to happen.
And if life gives you lemons, (or a relocation followed by a pandemic followed by a strike) just carve out your own space for yourself because you deserve a seat at the table.
When one moment your in front of the camera and the next your, well, still in front but umm…
