ART-THERAPY & CANCER , Indonesia
In art-therapy we coincieve art as a language to meet an inner need and translate it into an expression, an inner dialogue, a shape; sometimes we do it alone, sometimes with another being.
Our body, the first temple of our soul, has its own phisical language to express. We call it sympthom (body indicator) when the message tends to illness.
Art-therapy, through all expressive arts, offers a way to translate the sympthom and meet its inner soul need.
Cancer, one of the most fatal diseases, has its own inner need to be met, its sympthoms to be translated. Chemical treatment helps the physical, but many times it is not enough.
Balinese artist Made Kaek
@madekaek can deeply talk about it and I am going to share some of our reflections on this intimate issue here, with his permission.
I met him in his home studio in Bali, a welcoming space full of all kinds of monsters? genis? funny friends? everywhere. I was impressed. We easly jumped into craetive vibes, talking and drawing together exchanging an on-going drawing.
He explained me he suffered from tongue cancer. He was 1 month hospitalized recieving chemical therapy. He felt the urge to paint. And when able, he exploted in a creative process.
"Painting saved my life"
"I learnt not to fight against cancer, but follow it in a creative path"
"Illness is sent by God, I have to take it, to learn and evolve. So God glory is honoured. And so is my life"
I draw him a portrait in my free yet skilled hand with opened windows and falling stars. Free fast energy composing a new scene, so inspired by him.
He shared me his first "cancer" drawing: yet contained lines, two faces not looking each other. His work evolved to a wide dimension where he could bodily dialogue with all "his monsters".
The art work evolves from grotesque to funny. Me, walking through it, is like meeting own and collective fears.
Fears that sleep in the shadow. Time to meet them is needed to keep our balance. That is why I also explore them in my creative indonesian journey.
( I continue in comments 🙏and also tomorrow in the ART-THERAPY Master class in
