Artist Statement:
I don’t usually make work about my personal life. With black art students I sometimes feel like there’s a need to make work about blackness or culture which I still love to make work about, but that’s not all we are.
This painting is about self sabotage and mental health. Letting yourself down can feel extremely painful, but sitting in that fear of failure is what stops me from growing. Listening to negative thoughts and insecurities rather than an optimistic outlook on life and success in many cases has kept me from reaching to my full potential. Talking about mental stability in college especially amongst the black or African community I feel like can be really taboo, and I think if people were more open about it, a lot of us wouldn’t feel so alone. I’m glad that I’m now out of this pit, but I wanted to make a painting remembering this time.
In the painting her wings are severed with the small detail that there are scissors in her hand. When I was brainstorming the painting I thought a lot about the concept of a bird getting their wings clipped which restricts their ability to fly. I wanted to have my own dramatic take on that as in this age in adolescence, everything feels like it’s the end of the world. The beautiful thing about clipped wings is they have the ability to grow back. For some it can take longer than others, but we all are capable of flight after being knocked down.
this was SO fun!! bring back fun makeup guys!!! if I had the right sage I’d blue/indigo and white that would’ve brought this to the next levellll, but it’s ok we use what we got!

i be seeing such elaborate makeup tutorials and have a very elaborate one myself (not today obviously 🙄), and i just really think painting could be such a fun hobby for people who already have a love for makeup!

i forgot how long it took me to understand how to mix my colors especially since i had to teach myself how to paint dark skin!! hopefully this can help someone make sense of it all it can definitely be overwhelming at first!
