It’s easy to assume making a website more sustainable requires a full rebuild.
But in reality, it’s shaped by our everyday decisions.
Here, Matt highlights one of the simplest (and most overlooked) examples: how unoptimised assets can quietly drive up a website’s environmental impact.
But it doesn’t just stop there...
Sustainable digital products are built through a series of small, thoughtful choices:
– using fewer, better assets
– avoiding unnecessary technical bloat
– choosing greener hosting
– building systems that last, not ones that need replacing
Individually, they seem quite minor, but together, they make a meaningful difference!

Here’s our take: it’s not about saying yes or no. It’s about using AI where it genuinely makes a difference... reducing wasted time, effort and energy.
Used for simple shortcuts? Probably not.
Used to replace hours or days of repetitive work? That’s smart.

Reflecting on the @worldeconomicforum in Davos, in collaboration with @uniofexeter and their Climate Impact Team, we helped bring a simple idea to life: letting people test the carbon impact of their websites in real time.
The results? Quite surprising! In just a few days we had:
• 1,200+ unique site tests (both in MonkeyRock at Davos and online)
• ~250–300 people stopped to try it in person
• Peak traffic: 900+ requests in a single hour
• Dozens of attendees who had screenshot their scores and sent them straight to their web teams
Not because we told them to, but because seeing your impact changes how you think about it.
Going greener in digital doesn’t land when it’s abstract. It lands when people can touch it - or at least see it for themselves and we think this application really highlighted just that!

Built with @uniofexeter 's Nature + Climate Impact Team, it’s now live at MonkeyRock: A Species Corner for Nature - and already getting people curious as we showcase a web-based platform that makes digital emissions visible and relatable, translating website emissions into comparisons grounded in nature.

Turn numbers into nature, and suddenly people are curious, asking questions, thinking differently. At madeby.studio, we believe digital sustainability needs better storytelling, not just more numbers, and Davos is already showing why!
