@vsdfestival_ 2024: Wh/aacking Champion 🏆 How does it feel? That's a question folks have been asking me and I've been contemplating how I truly feel. I feel grateful. The experience of traveling, being challenged in different environments, and to have time & resources to do this. The energy standing on Robson Square on Main Day and on-stage for prelim day, having the opportunity to learn more about myself, the free agency I have in traveling without expectations, the genuine moments of connection with people. I think the biggest gift for this moment is seeing the support I received from my people. I am realizing that it means the world to me. Seeing my cousin jump up and down for me when I won. My Seattle friends chanting my name as I throw azz. Loved ones giving me flowers and affirmations. It feels overwhelming, makes me shy, and at the same time, I love it and want to practice receiving because we're only here right now. People don't have to do these things, but they do. The organizers, DJs, judges, attendees, competitors, MCs, volunteers, media team. Because they all said yes, it made what this event was. I wrote this song for my mom and released it to the world exactly a year ago. It feels really special to have my ah ma's laugh in the song and for us to hear it. We miss you, ah ma. Happy mother's day to you all. To the new mothers, house mothers, stepmothers, grandmothers, cat & dog mothers, and all the other ways that mothers mother. I'm thinking of my friends that have lost their mothers/ motherly figures too. Ah ma. Will miss you. 99 years of life. At 11, you had to leave home alone and I know that must have been scary and so hard. To go to a new country and to figure out how to survive. At 60, you had to again and this time with family. You found so many joys in exploring and seeing the world. You flew and walked throughout life. Even when you could not travel anymore, you found so many joys in the small things in life. Food, watching videos of others traveling, and receiving small massages of care. And it was never alone. My mom would be there to laugh with you, celebrate small wins with you, and watch videos of Vietnam with you. It was a deep love that was so beautiful to witness. I saw how you showed care for her and how much my mom cared for you. I know this past decade was not easy for both of you. It was so hard and also such a privilege at the same time. I am grateful to have gotten to spend lots of time with you. Caring for one another is the deepest gift to have in this world. Thank you so much to every single person who has come by to say hi, dropped off food, or showed care in any form for her. Care for her is care also care for my mom and I. Thank you. I'll miss your sweet giggles and I'm excited to continue to hear more stories about you. I know that you are always with me. And I love you forever, ah ma.

The difference between making something a home versus just a place you live in has been a war in my heart lately. As a refugee immigrant here in the states, my family modeled to me how to make a home when you had to leave. We had to learn to find our people, and also learn to love new peoples and places and make it home. What does that even have to do with our 12th End of Term Battle? Looking back, The Beacon has become home from when I first joined in the new location. It’s something we take care of, remain grounded in it’s values, and still, see things evolve, see things change, see a family that has stuck through it all, and see new peoples feeling that love for the first time. Nothing perfect about it, but effort over time has told a story of enduring storms and letting planted trees bear fruit. I hope we saw something like that that night; not just another place you dance and not just another battle for just another round. My hope is that you saw something people long before me have loved and taken care of. It’s their home and you can take that warmth with you where ever you go.
