I keep forgetting to post! Anyway, here's a chunky ol' Plant Hopper (Issus coleoptratus). Been wanting to see this species for a while, and I feel like that odd face explains why! . I was out with my son when we found this, and just as I finished firing away for this shot, this little guy decided to show us exactly why it's called a 'hopper'. *Ping!* straight at my face and bounced off my lip 😲 Eli couldn't contain himself and laughed to the point he almost peed 😂 Good times! - #Issuscoleoptratus - 📷 @canonuk EOS R7, @venuslaowa 90mm f2.8 2x Ultra Macro APO, @godox_global v860ii. - Handheld - Manual Focus - Stacked Image. - Always wild and unharmed. -- @bbcearth @thewildlifetrusts @bbcwildlifemagazine @natgeo

Okay, October is done, so let's have a (small) break from spiders and add some insects back into the gallery! This green-eyed beauty is a Silvery Leafcutter Bee (Megachile leachella) 😍 Subjects like this make getting up early worth it, which is good because we didn't find much else 😅 - #Megachileleachella - 📷 @canonuk EOS R7, @venuslaowa 90mm f2.8 2x Ultra Macro APO, @godox_global v860ii. - Handheld - Manual Focus - Stacked Image. - Always wild and unharmed. -- @bbcearth @thewildlifetrusts

Happy Halloween 🎃 and the final day of this year's #arachtober celebrations! I thought I would end the month with an image of my favourite species, the Heather Crab Spider (Thomisus onustus). I've posted this pretty lady guarding her egg sac before, but I found a stack I hadn't processed. Gift horse and all that 😄 . I've loved seeing all the spiders during October, and although I still have loads to post, I do have a growing backlog of insects to get out! Saved plenty of posts from you guys that I need to check out properly, too 😍 - #thomisusonustus - 📷 @sonyalpha A6000, @venuslaowa 90mm f2.8 2x Ultra Macro APO, YongNuo YN560 III. - Handheld - Manual Focus - Stacked Image. - Always wild and unharmed. -- @bbcearth @thewildlifetrusts @dorsetwildlife

Back to the sand dunes for this! A bit of an impromptu outing with @bug_ninja back in April, which turned out to be a worthwhile 6 hours of driving! Here are two different Sand Running Spiders (Rhysodromus fallax) 😍 A species that had stubbornly sat on my bucket list for about 5 years or so, which is why said drive was an easy venture to undertake! . Of course, as with anything, there were no guarantees... And just look at that camouflage! Not an easy subject to spot, especially as that location is battered by strong winds, so movement catches your eye constantly. Dried bit of seaweed here, crusty dead fly there 😅 - #Rhysodromusfallax - 📷 @canonuk EOS R7, @venuslaowa 90mm f2.8 2x Ultra Macro APO, @godox_global v860ii. - Handheld - Manual Focus - Stacked Image. - Always wild and unharmed. -- @bbcearth @norfolkwt

Despite my reach being at an all-time low, I'm going to keep pushing on with #arachtober 🙌 This time, the very widespread and common Cross Orb-weaver (Araneus diadematus). A perspective I certainly wouldn't usually go for, but when I noticed the wasps head poking out like that, I couldn't resist 😅 "fml" came to mind, which is summed up well in the second frame. . Wasps like this Vespula sp. can often be seen intentionally crashing into webs in the hopes of either stealing the spiders prey, or catching the spider off guard and getting lucky with a fellow predator. This time, luck was not on its side. - #araneusdiadematus - 📷 @canonuk EOS R7, @venuslaowa 90mm f2.8 2x Ultra Macro APO, @godox_global v860ii. - Handheld - Manual Focus - Stacked Image. - Always wild and unharmed. -- @bbcearth @thewildlifetrusts

Oof 😍 Here's one that hasn't been in my gallery for quite some time! The UK's only native Sparassidae; the Green Huntsman (Micrommata virescens). Might not be as fancy as some of the other species out there, and certainly not as large, but it's ours 😋 . I'm surprised there's no evidence of the weather present in this image, as there certainly was on myself and @invertebrain 😅 It was not ideal macro weather at all. However, it was a fab day, with some awesome subjects! #arachtober - #Micrommatavirescens - 📷 @canonuk EOS R7, @venuslaowa 90mm f2.8 2x Ultra Macro APO, @godox_global v860ii. - Handheld - Manual Focus - Stacked Image. - Always wild and unharmed. -- @bbcearth @thewildlifetrusts @surreywildlifetrust

It's #internationaljumpingspiderday, so here's my post for it! One of the primary targets for my visit to Norfolk and the surrounding areas, with legend @invertebrain , and our super duper handsome host @bug_ninja ; the Reed Jumping Spider (Marpissa radiata) 😍 Not one you'll see often as this is a nationally scarce species, so it's fantastic to tick it off the list! #arachtober . We were searching among the very dense reeds of the fen, hoping for signs of movement, which was quite the task as the visibility through the habitat was poor, to say the least 🧐 I decided to delve a little deeper, pushing through the 8ft vegetation. Thankfully, the dry spring did mean my feet didn't get too moist 😄 Some of the seed heads of the reeds were densely packed. I expected to find Furrow Orb-weavers hiding within, but out popped this adult female! - #Marpissaradiata - 📷 @canonuk EOS R7, @venuslaowa 90mm f2.8 2x Ultra Macro APO, @godox_global v860ii. - Handheld - Manual Focus - Stacked Image. - Always wild and unharmed. -- @bbcearth @thewildlifetrusts @suffolkwildlifetrust

While digging through some files from last year, I came across this little stack of a rather tiny juvenile Lynx Spider (Oxyopes heterophthalmus). For a sense of scale, those flowers are heather, and not the larger bell variety either! Just a quick one to keep my #arachtober ball rolling 😊 - #Oxyopesheterophthalmus - 📷 @sonyalpha A6000, @venuslaowa 90mm f2.8 2x Ultra Macro APO, YongNuo YN560 III. - Handheld - Manual Focus - Stacked Image. - Always wild and unharmed. -- @bbcearth @thewildlifetrusts @surreywildlifetrust

Well, it's #arachtober, so I better get posting! I have plenty for it (surprise, surprise), but I'll start with this cutie; the Sputnik Spider (Paidiscura pallens) 😍 Named due to that fantastic looking egg sac, which apparently resembles the 1950s satellite of the same name. Reaching a bit 😅 But the structure does vary quite a bit between individuals, so maybe I just haven't seen the one! . I found a fantastic location with plenty of oak saplings, which this species seems to favour, and I became a little obsessed with going back and getting more and more photos of these 😬 Soooo, expect them to 'launch' your way again in the future 😉 - #Paidiscurapallens - 📷 @canonuk EOS R7, @venuslaowa 90mm f2.8 2x Ultra Macro APO, @godox_global v860ii. - Handheld - Manual Focus - Stacked Image. - Always wild and unharmed. -- @bbcearth @thewildlifetrusts

Before I sit on this one for any longer, I thought I better get it posted, especially as I have more that I would consider better than this 😋 Anyway, here is the stunning Wasp Spider (Argiope bruennichi). Not a native species here in the UK, but one that's been around for a while and is well established. I'm certainly not complaining 😍 . Some of you will have seen this scene in stories, or even the reel I posted. That being said, the amount of effort that went into this shot means it deserves at least 2 posts 😅 I'm sure you don't mind! - #Argiopebruennichi - 📷 @canonuk EOS R7, @venuslaowa 90mm f2.8 2x Ultra Macro APO, @godox_global v860ii. - Handheld - Manual Focus - Stacked Image. - Always wild and unharmed. -- @bbcearth @nottinghamshirewildlife @bbcwildlifemagazine @natgeo

One of my best finds of the year, and a species that's been on my bucket list for several years! This is an adult male Pied-palped Jumping Spider (Talavera petrensis), and he's ridiculously tiny! 🧐 Swipe to see him compared to some lichen. So small! . Starting off with a heavy crop as he's hard to appreciate without it. I'll definitely be going back for another attempt as I'm not that happy with the images I got. That's the way it is sometimes, as we all know 🙌 - #Talaverapetrensis - 📷 @canonuk EOS R7, @venuslaowa 90mm f2.8 2x Ultra Macro APO, @godox_global v860ii. - Handheld - Manual Focus - Stacked Image. - Always wild and unharmed. -- @bbcearth @thewildlifetrusts @surreywildlifetrust @bbcwildlifemagazine

A very spidery looking spider for you today! Although common, it's a genus I've never seen before, so it's great to tick it off. This is a Dark Funnel Spider (Coelotes atropos), and isn't she a beauty 😍 Side note, not really sure on the common name... - #Coelotesatropos - 📷 @canonuk EOS R7, @venuslaowa 90mm f2.8 2x Ultra Macro APO, @godox_global v860ii. - Handheld - Manual Focus - Stacked Image. - Always wild and unharmed. -- @bbcearth @bbcwildlifemagazine @natgeo
