We are proud to share that our dear María Elena Pombo is currently in residence at Smack Mellon in New York, as part of their 2025–2026 Artist Studio Program.
Founded in 1995 in Brooklyn, Smack Mellon has become a vital platform for artists working at pivotal moments in their practice, offering one of the most competitive and respected studio residencies in the United States. Each year, a small group of artists is selected from hundreds of applicants to receive not only studio space, but the time, resources, and critical context needed to expand their work in meaningful ways.
María Elena Pombo, born in Caracas and based in New York, develops a practice that moves between material research, ecology, and systems of knowledge, building interconnected bodies of work that feel both tactile and speculative. Her trajectory includes residencies such as Yaddo and NEW INC at the New Museum, and her work is held in collections including the Art Institute of Chicago.
During the residency, Smack Mellon opens its studios to the public, creating rare moments of proximity between artist and process. The next Open Studios will take place during the DUMBO Open Studios on April 18 and 19, offering an opportunity to enter the space of making, to encounter the work as it is still becoming, and to share time with María Elena as she navigates this important chapter.
We look forward to being there, alongside her, listening, observing, and sharing this experience.
