Weeks posts
🥳 What a fitting week to celebrate the incredible work of dietitians like our very own @macaninche ! As Dietitians Week came to an end, this coincided with the last day of term @culinarymedicineuk for UCL Medical School as we wrapped up another fantastic year of training tomorrow’s doctors. 📝 Elaine, our visionary Nutrition Education Lead, was a lead author of the groundbreaking 2020 article “Time for Nutrition in Medical Education” published in BMJ Nutrition, Prevention & Health. This influential piece has been instrumental in driving a much-needed conversation around integrating comprehensive nutrition education into medical curricula across the UK. 🍎 Thanks to pioneering dietitians like Elaine, we’re witnessing a positive shift in how nutrition is perceived and taught in medical training. Her article has inspired educational institutions and the NHS to recognise the critical role of nutrition in preventative care and disease management. 🍽️ At Culinary Medicine UK, we’re proud to be at the forefront of this change, serving as the leading provider of culinary medicine for nutrition education at prestigious institutions like UCL named as one of the Top 10 universities in the world this week 🏆 🥇 Having trained over 2,000 medical students including at renowned Bristol University, tomorrow’s Doctors will improve the lives of 1000’s of patients with @culinarymedicineuk 👩🏽‍🍳 Our dream team, including Elaine, GP tutor and CEO @doctor_sumi and culinary lead @chefvincekelly @kyladjamila came together yesterday to deliver a powerful training session, equipping future doctors with the knowledge and skills to address patients’ nutritional needs effectively in diabetes and food and nutrition insecurity 👩‍🍳 🙌 Yesterdays class was also joined by special guests, the esteemed Dr. John Launer, a renowned GP, educator, and award-winning writer pioneering narrative medicine and the longest-serving medical columnists in the UK for BMJ as well as Dr Devina Maru, Deputy Director Medical Education (Primary Care) at UCL. 👀 We look forward to sharing about other incredible guests we have had in our classes 🚀 [culinarymedicine, food, nutrition insecurity, beansishow]

Time For Nutrition in Medical Education - - ✍ @luke__2210 Kathy Martyn and I analysed data from medical students and doctors on perceptions of nutrition in MedEd and medical practice. This includes: - 🧐 curiculum review data from Kathy Martyn and I @bsmsmedschool (ERimNN) - 🧐 Doctor survey data from @crocd . - 🧐 Student & Dr survey data from @nutritank_official . - 🧐 NNEdpro led interviews with doctors and medical student data gathered by @harrycarter93 and others. _ ⚠️Survey data is subject to bias as the most interested are likely to respond BUT there was agreement across all sources on the importance of nutrition for doctors and most felt training was inadequate. 🤔Although interested in nutrition this was not translated into practice with over 70% addressing nutrition less than once a month citing knowledge, time and confidence as the main barriers - 🤔 There is a need for greater clarity on a doctors role within the multidisciplinary team, including when to refer on for specialist help from Registered dietitians, Nutritionists or community support/ social prescribing - 😢 With 1 in 3 of the population worldwide malnourished (This applies to under or over nutrition or/ and with micronutrient deficiencies) but only 2.3 nutrition professionals per 100 000 global population (WHO) we argue all professionals need skills to assess, diagnosis and offer first line support for nutrition problems - 🤝🏻This is about multiprofessional actions. Doctors aren't dietitians but dietitians are not a front line service. 🤝🏻We need far better communication and referral processes along with a greater understanding of the complexity so we can tailor support and onward referral appropriate to medical need/ socioeconomic circumstances/ patient concerns and goals. - This paper is a collaboration between @NNEdPro , @ERimNN and @nutritank_official . - Watch this space. More exciting announcements on this coming next week Along with our friends @culinarymedicineuk who I also work with to develop engaging teaching. 😎👊 - Swipe across for @_fitwithesha infographic - Link in the bio to read the paper in BMJ Nutrition Prevention and Health - #nutritioneducation

Here's my grandad John Duncan. - He always managed to put things in perspective for me. - His plane was shot down in WW2. - He survived and lived on to have 7 children. - He had the biggest smile and always had something positive to say about others. - Things do change. Life does get better but it is your values that hold you steady. - Simple values my grandad taught me that carry me through my darkest times. - Equality. "We are all jock Tamsons bairns" Scottish for we are all the same. - Tolerance "there's nought as queer as folk" or live and let live and try not to compare your life to others ( I hate instagram for this and why I find it uncomfortable sharing photos of my family meals). - Connection. When my grandad died we realised he was the connection point for the family. He was always asking questions and updating you on others. He saw the good in everyone and he made a point of telling you. - I am by no means perfect. I struggle to stay positive and like many, at times I suffer with anxiety, depression and low self esteem. However I am comforted by the fact that tomorrow/ next week I will feel differently and I am doing my best. - I hope all are doing ok in lockdown. Stay safe and one final wise quote I try to live by - "Be excellent to eachother" ✌🌈 - - #veday75 #resilience #covid19

"This is a pandemic not a famine" Quote from the Independent Food Aid Network - We need urgent emergency coronavirus income support to prevent people falling into food poverty and destitution - Food banks and charities have joined forces to write to the UK govt demanding they address food poverty due to: - A 81% rise in food bank use during Covid19. A 122% rise in food parcels to families with kids. - As a family currently surviving on 1 income and hungry kids at home we are feeling the pinch. - This is nothing compared to those that were already struggling to make ends meet. - Some people access food banks but due to the associated stigma many don't. - One example this week from my clinical work is a pregnant woman living on toast. - As a family we are trying to help our neighbours with shopping and running deliveries from our local foodbank. - Many many people are doing the same but what happens in the longterm and who are not asking for help but struggling alone? - Yes we need emergency support to help those in need now. We also need to consider how to secure food affordability and accessibility for the future. - @trusselltrust @IFAN_UK @actionon_poverty @jrf_uk The child poverty action group @stepchangecharity @turn2us_org @childrens_trust

❓Where to access food❓ - 🤔 This has been a question we have been trying to answer as a dietitian team @bsuhnhstrust - 📞 Last week I rang all round sussex to find cheap meal delivery companies and food banks - 👏 There are some amazing community organisations adapting fast - 💪@btnhovefood are co-ordinating efforts through Brighton and Hove - 📦 Food banks now delivering food parcels to homes - 🚚 A wholesaler with surplus stock delivering to households (instead of normally supplying restaurants) - 🥘 Meal delivery companies opening up new kitchens to meet increase in orders - 👐 Armies of volunteers - ⛑ New Covid19 mutual Aid websites popping up where you can register to give or receive help - ✅ We have created an electronic document detailing where to buy food / deliveries / take away / food banks / gov & charity services / eating with a health condition / limited ingredient recipes / staying healthy & nutrition ✅ The idea is to text this to all hospital discharges and share with community groups ✅ Proud to connect with my community and to contribute in any way we can ✅ more needs to be done and hoping to see more central organisation via Gov.uk with plans to deliver food parcels - 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 @neil.mac.photo my husband is looking forward to volunteering with our local food bank next week - 🤗 In these uncertain times I think helping others is the only way to process and cope with the challenges ahead - Wishing you all health, safety and sanity 💪🌈😊xx
