Our social security system is a vital public service, that helps us stay afloat when life changes. But at the moment people are being treated with suspicion and contempt when they try to access support. Right now, the system isn’t working. We have just released our new report, Stigma in the System: Experiences of the UK social security system. Commissioned from the @universityofbristol ’s Personal Finance Research Centre, you can read the full report via the link in our bio ☝️ Rather than a helping hand during moments of crisis – the system is built around control and suspicion. 💭 Over half (51%) of claimants said that applying made their mental health worse. 😔 80% of #PIP claimants worry that their benefits could be taken away from them in the future. ❌ 64% of people who had applied for support felt that the system was trying to catch them out. Ultimately, only 15% of people found the support from their work coach useful. It lays bare the urgent need for reform built on dignity, fairness, and trust. We have pinpointed three critical areas of focus: 1. The operation of Jobcentres and the role of Work Coaches 2. The use of sanctions and conditionality 3. The Personal Independence Payment assessment process Next month, we will publish a policy report, detailing practical recommendations to reduce stigma in these parts of the system. Follow Steve as he tackles an impressive 430-mile cycle from 1st – 10th May! Steve, who works for our partner organisation, Elizabeth Finn Homes, will be cycling the equivalent distance between all the Homes, from Suffolk to Devon, raising £1,000, helping people struggling to afford the basics right now.
