I’ve played 361 games of asphalt soccer in the last three and a half years. It’s been the one constant in a period of change. It feels silly to dedicate so much time to glorified pickup footy, but @stfc.la has given me a second home, even if that home has shifted from a Ktown rooftop to a cracked West Side school playground to The Bridge. I’m grateful that @streetfc has given us a chance to build a community and provide a place for others to play, no matter who they are. Here’s to another 361 as long as my joints don’t give out on me.

Tacos, Water and ‘Homies’: A Gas Station Becomes a Uniquely L.A. Relief Site
Out of desperation and a need for social bonding, volunteers have banded together to help Altadena residents. Four lowriders, parked alongside gas pumps, gleamed in the afternoon sun. Carne asada sizzled on a grill at a pop-up taco stand in the corner. A group of old friends sat on camping chairs and passed around a freshly rolled blunt, cracking jokes and showing each other photos on their phones. Hip-hop played on a wireless speaker.

Just feet from the taco stand were a dozen tables piled with donated shirts, blankets and toiletries that were meticulously organized. A moving van loaded with cases of water, boxes of chips and crates of diapers backed into the gas station.

The filling station, perched across the street from one of the most destructive wildfires in California’s history, had suddenly become the vibrant hub of a traumatized neighborhood, a harbor for residents desperate for food, clothes and, especially, community.

Kate called me in the middle of 2022 and asked if I wanted to do a book. I quickly dismissed the idea as insane over the phone. That was pretty much the end of the conversation. The story wasn’t over yet. Ours wasn’t either. It was just starting. So when he bought the damn thing in Oct. 2022 and the daily coverage could no longer fit in the rectangles of broadsheet columns I called her back. It was time. Kate came looking for a writing partner. What she got was a best friend, speed dial favorite, brother, tandem bike sharer, hater, roaster, ride-or-die, tattoo buddy, bad listener, and left brain all in one. I’ve spent more time talking to Kate in the last two years than anyone else and we created something that hopefully will stand for a long time. Our book is about the limitations of a powerful man as he bought his favorite thing in the world. While working with her, I realized Kate has none. She can do it all. That’s my Kate!
