Happy International Women’s Day! I feel incredibly lucky to have been guided along my path as a director by several amazing women. In the opera world, stage directing is still largely dominated by men. But despite the odds, about half of my directing mentors have been brilliant women. 💪✨ Here’s to the women who lead, mentor, and make space for the next generation of artists! Much love to Jennifer Tarver, @annatheodosakis , @allison.grant.583 , @mariaslamont ♥️

“Ramla and the Desert is a fairytale-style story that came out of me trying to emotionally process, rationalize, and make sense of desert disappearances.” @iamnehal “It was a friend of mine, a while ago, who had said to me that fairy tales emerged out of trauma — and this is a fairy tale-like story that [emerged] out of trauma,” Nehal explains. “Not my own, but a traumatic event that keeps on happening to people over and over again.” “I've been researching desert borders and became aware of the scale of migrants and refugees disappearing in the Sahara. If you can't count people, you don't have to account for them. It's a documented border control strategy which weaponizes the desert to disappear people trying to cross into other countries.” “I was finding out all of this information and trying to make sense of it,” she shares. “And then the war in Sudan broke out, and what had been this academic study of testimony and documenting and other people became really, really personal. I didn't know how to process it… and to be honest, I still don't.” “The hope of [Ramla and the Desert] is that it draws attention to the plight of migrants in the Sahara, which also gives people a way to contend with grief and loss.” “Ramla and the Desert” is part of the Greenhouse Festival at Tarragon Theatre in Toronto. Festival passes and tickets for the 2025/26 season are available for: Tuesday, Jan. 27, Thursday, Jan. 29, and Saturday, Jan. 31. For more information, visit @tarragontheatreto ’s website! One final post for @tapestryopera Briefs! Thanks to the amazing Sisters Gray for their fantastically playful piece No Nose Knows! Rebecca and Rachel’s creativity is through the roof and it was fun to direct a piece with as much personality as this one. Sneeze conductors, noisemakers, piss puppets and giant noses. This opera short had it all! Everything you see was made from recycled construction and packing materials in my back alley which has become my makeshift studio. I shudder to think what my neighbours must think! NO NOSE KNOWS Composed by: Rebecca Gray Libretto by: Rachel Gray @r.gray.art The tiny person who lives in the nose: Jorell Williams @jorellogram The nose: Adanya Dunn @adanyadunn The sneeze conductor: Keith Klassen The booger: Reilly Nelson Directed by: Mabel Wonnacott Music Direction: Hyejin Kwon @hjk_870 Lighting design: @shardi_b_cardi 📸 @dahliakatz

Creating a moldy yogurt puppet for opera was not on my bingo card this year… life is full of surprises! Shout out to Rebecca Gray whose music is constantly pushing boundaries. It’s catchy, it’s fun, it’s fresh. It’s moldy yogurt, an old sponge and a guy we love to hate named Tony! P.s. - if anyone is looking for a professional gargler, I would recommend @gregohgreg ! His skills are unmatched. Briefs is wrapped and I’m taking a moment to reflect on the incredible emotional range of the singers, composers and librettists involved in this process. Although my feed has been full of puppets and giants noses, I feel very privileged to have directed these two beautiful works which meditate on the enormity of grief and how it shapes us.
