This weekend……. 💥🙌Open Studios🙌💥 Saturday 16 May: 11am - 5pm Sunday 17 May: 11am - 5pm PV Friday 15 May: 6-8pm Celebrating 30 years of Phoenix, and 30 years of me being in Brighton - wow. I’ve been a studio member since 1999, a lot has changed since then - both in and outside the building. It’s the largest studio network on the South Coast, home to 120 professional artists at all stages of their careers including painters, photographers, filmmakers and designers. Open Studios is a chance to explore the studios of the artists, designers and creative businesses who work inside Phoenix Art Space; come and learn about their practices, processes and ideas and gain insight into the surroundings that serve to support and inspire them. Exhibitions in the Main Gallery, Window Gallery and Project Space on the ground floor will be open all weekend. #outofline is currently up in the Window Gallery - my joint exhibition with fellow studio member @donnellpatrick (on until the 31st May). I’ll be in my studio all weekend, which is on the second floor - 2N6, come on up and say hello 🙂 xx Please note that only the ground floor of Phoenix Art Space is currently wheelchair accessible and all studios floors must be accessed via stairs. Starting next week I’ll be exhibiting with the brilliant #donnellpatrick in our joint show - Out Of Line - at the Window Gallery, Phoenix Art Space, Brighton. Please come join us for the private view on the 8th, or a visit during May - it’s also Open Studios on the 16th and 17th 🙂   This joint exhibition has been prompted by a Phoenix Spotlight evening back in September 2025 where both artists were independently invited to present self-curated, contextualised, talks about their work, themes and development over the past 20+ years. Realizing the connections, cross overs, overlaps and common grounds that emerged from the talks, the artists continued the dialogue to inform the concept of this exhibition, developing the process from studio thinking to gallery realisation.   Line has connected both artists’ individual practices, not only as a recurring formal element, but also as a metaphor, and tool, to explore themes of origin, identity, place, time, travel, social and geopolitical issues. With both artists working in a predominantly reductive, largely non-figurative manner, it is the weight of the line that carries the meaning from behind. Colour, surface, form and experimentation have led both artists to work in diverse methods and media to present their ideas - this exhibition will feature an array of approaches including threads, drawings, prints and paintings  - exploring dialogues between key elements of each artist’s enquiry, and a site-specific collaborative installation using threads.   A revisited Spotlight artists’ talk - “Lines of Enquiry” will take place on the 22nd May to accompany the exhibition. Last few days to catch the Resonance Exhibition at @fabricagallery , Brighton, with @sussexcontemporary Housed in a former church, Fabrica first opened in March 1996. It’s a rare gem in Brighton, one of the last standing creative spaces whose mission is to present high-quality art and craft to a broad audience, enabling more people to access, enjoy and learn from it. Over the years it has housed some incredible exhibitions - including Anish Kapoor, Olafur Eliasson and Martin Parr - 3 of my all time faves. I worked as a volunteer invigilator at Fabrica for a few months when I first moved to Brighton and here I am, 30 years later, with my work up on its walls. Circles eh… Time eh…. ❤️ The setting, and the hanging 🙏, are perfect for my work as light beams pass across the threads from up high. Love seeing these on a dark wall for the first time; colour doing colour. What an amazing PV last night at Resonance, such a brilliantly curated show in such a wonderful space. Massive thanks to @sussexcontemporary , @fabricagallery , @joannamylesartist and the judges for including my work, and for the mentoring prize - I am delighted. Selected by an independent panel of judges, the works in the exhibition explore how ideas, materials and experiences echo across time, place and community - what lingers, what returns, and what continues to shape us. Painting, sculpture, photography, installation and mixed-media works come together in dialogue within Fabrica’s unique former-church space. Each work offers its own interpretation of the theme, inviting visitors to consider how artworks can reverberate beyond the moment of encounter.
