We are genuinely curious! The logical answer is pattern first. Check the requirements, shop with purpose, stick to the plan. But fabric has a way of making the plan irrelevant. 😆 Which one comes first for you, the pattern or the fabric? Tell us in the comments👇 #maaidesign #fabricpoll #fabricshop #fabriclife #sewing

Studio days look a little like this at the moment. Maaike in her @annaallenclothing Pomona Pants sewn in Smooth Operator Deep Lagoon and it's a real wardrobe workhorse. Thrown on in the morning, still looking great by evening. The sweater is a Toaster Sweater by @sewhouse7 in a @johannaralph.co printed french terry from last year... and now we're wondering if we need to bring it back. Let us know in the comments if you'd like to see it back again👇 #maaidesign #wintersewing #memade #fabricstore #sewing

We’ve stocked Smooth Operator for a couple of years now… and we keep bringing it back because customers genuinely love sewing and wearing it! Soft and drapey with a little stretch for comfort, wrinkle-resistant, and easy to wear all day without feeling stiff or restrictive. It travels beautifully too, which makes it such a practical option for everyday clothes that still look polished. The drape, weight, and subtle structure of this fabric makes it surprisingly versatile. If you’ve sewn with Smooth Operator before, we’d love to hear what you made! The drape, weight, and subtle structure of this fabric make it surprisingly versatile. Happy mother’s day! Hoping all mums are getting spoilt today. Maybe a @modernmakers.co membership is your push to finally sew a pair of jeans, our theme for the next 3 months. Today is the last day you can join. See link in profile. Happy sewing! 😘

This is one of those little sewing tips that surprises people ✂️ When we’re choosing between two thread colours that are both close matches, we’ll usually go for the darker option. Why? A lighter thread might look like the perfect match sitting on the spool… but once stitched, it can actually stand out more against the fabric. A slightly darker thread, on the other hand, tends to blend in and visually “disappear” into the fabric. You can really see the difference once the thread is unwound against the fabric rather than just looking at the spool colour. Of course, this isn’t a hard rule and not everyone agrees 😊 Sometimes contrast stitching is exactly the look you want. But if your goal is a more seamless finish, this is usually our go-to approach. Curious… which one would you pick? #maaidesign #handmadewardrobe #sewingtips #fabricstore #sewing

Have you met Smooth Operator yet? Soft and drapey, wrinkle-resistant, easy to sew, and incredibly comfortable to wear… this fabric really does live up to its name. It has just the right amount of stretch, a beautiful fluid drape, and enough structure for garments like trousers, culottes, dresses, skirts, and relaxed blazers. ✔ Wrinkle resistant ✔ Great for travelling ✔ Soft + drapey ✔ Bamboo + recycled polyester blend ✔ Comfortable stretch ✔ 12 colours available #maaidesign #Sewing #memade #fabricstore #handmadewardrobe

One of the nicest things about sewing with quilted fabric? No quilting required! 😉 But you get that beautiful texture, ready to cut and sew. It’s the kind of shortcut that means you get straight to the fun part (and into wearing your make sooner!). These quilted fabrics are perfect for all your cosy outer layers. Think warm jackets, easy vests, jumpers and coats. Corduroy season is well and truly here 🤎 We have three different corduroys in store this year, and they’re all a little different, so we thought we’d break it down. From the chunkier wide wale, to the in-between multi wale, through to the finer pin wale… each one suits a different kind of project.
