Even with the accessibility on other devices like the phone, pc, and tablets I think the VR headset makes this a fun experience. The Colour Black - Virtual Art Gallery is now open The Colour Black - A collection of black and white photographic artwork focused on black identity by Nalan Smartt Jr. The Virtual gallery is an extension of the solo exhibition that took place at Downing Gross cultural Arts Center in Newport News June 2024. The Photography series showcased in the Virtual Gallery is called Pantheon where the images presented are in a Monochromatic style of photography emphasizing the skin tone of the subjects and presents a contemporary vision of the human form. Growing up and being told I was black I examined what influenced my perception of that concept and personal experiences with the idea of black identity. Being in America, I had to realize the caveat of being labeled Black. There are subcultures, languages, clothing, music, nationalism, stereotypes, media influences as well as personal experiences that people across the Diaspora resonate with as a sense of “seeing/being self”. The Colour Black is a perspective in to my brain as the Artist. We’re so excited to announce the latest artist to grace the walls of The Basement! Nalan Smartt Jr.’s, creative direction journey has led him to develop a deep appreciation for photography, viewing it not only as an art form but also as a solace for self-expression. While being involved in the inception and execution of various art projects with multiple organizations throughout the Hampton Roads area in Virginia, he decided to teach himself photography in 2014. The process of being “self-taught” allowed him to cultivate a photography series called Lightseekers, showcasing a distinct style of photography as fine art. Using skin as his canvas and light as his brush, Smartt strives to push the boundaries of “Afrofuturism” and present art in its rawest form. Nalan’s work is on display now in The Basement! I had to share these to the world because It was truly amazing to see the impact of my exhibition last month. Not everyone that was there I had a chance to photograph or connect with but know it was felt and appreciated. Having family visit from Canada as well as friends showing their loved ones and new additions was simply empowering to witness as an Artist...as a Human. The concept of the show was the focus on Black Identity. What we were influenced to believe about the subject as well as our own experiences that we use to define ourselves as black people. I wanted to give the viewers a perception of being in my mind and what came to me manifesting the idea of black identity as I research as well as recollect experiences shared with other people. While my exhibition was up at Downing Gross Cultural Arts Center last month I decided to be of service. I offered free headshots for the youth and community members at the center for a couple of days. I ended up doing the headshots for the theatre summer camp kids and a senior's dance class and it was awesome seeing their personalities pop out in each image. I truly appreciate the people connecting with me in the city of Newport News and allowing me to be of service with my artistry. The community should not be denied culture simply because they can't afford it....
