Ballet Tapes: VHS Firebird | Age 20
This one is from 1999 performing in @wheeldony Firebird with Boston Ballet alongside the amazing @simonballballet .
Christopher was just beginning to make his mark as a choreographer at the time, and getting to perform this work was something really special. He went on to become one of the most celebrated choreographers in the world — Tony Awards, Broadway, you name it — so looking back, this feels like a pretty remarkable moment to have been part of.
The story of the Firebird is rooted in Russian folklore. A tyrant who seems immortal. Captive souls waiting to be freed. And a magical creature who, once shown mercy, reveals exactly where the darkness is hiding — and how to end it.
Honestly, I didn’t think much about the story of it back then. I was just trying to hit my marks and not royally f-it up. But I’ve been thinking about it a lot lately…
I hope you enjoy this little window into that time.

it’s Saturday. it’s pouring rain. felt like the perfect time to explore moving to this song.
this song was passed to me by my dear friend @jackburg after I shared a dream I had with him. I’m still processing it even though it was close to two months ago now. not sure I’ll ever make sense of it like many things these days but this seemed to help.
“Many’s the time I’ve been mistaken
And many times confused
Yes, and I’ve often felt forsaken
And certainly misused
Oh, but I’m alright, I’m alright
I’m just weary to my bones
Still, you don’t expect to be bright and bon vivant
So far away from home, so far away from home
And I don’t know a soul who’s not been battered
I don’t have a friend who feels at ease
I don’t know a dream that’s not been shattered
Or driven to its knees
But it’s alright, it’s alright
For we lived so well so long
Still, when I think of the
Road we’re traveling on
I wonder what’s gone wrong
I can’t help it, I wonder what has gone wrong
And I dreamed I was dying
I dreamed that my soul rose unexpectedly
And looking back down at me
Smiled reassuringly
And I dreamed I was flying
And high up above my eyes could clearly see
The Statue of Liberty
Sailing away to sea
And I dreamed I was flying
We come on the ship they call The Mayflower
We come on the ship that sailed the moon
We come in the age’s most uncertain hours
And sing an American tune
Oh, and it’s alright, it’s alright, it’s alright
You can’t be forever blessed
Still, tomorrow’s going to be another working day
And I’m trying to get some rest
That’s all I’m trying to get some rest”

impromptu sesh - sound on - Radiohead
because all I know to do these days between house chores, taking long walks, and telling as many people I can I love them…is this.
“Breathe, keep breathing
Don’t lose your nerve
Breathe, keep breathing
I can’t do this alone
Sing us a song
A song to keep us warm
There’s such a chill, such a chill
And you can laugh
A spineless laugh
We hope your rules and wisdom choke you”
a glimpse into what satisfies my soul
