Menswear at the
@metgalaofficial_ is often overshadowed by the glorious gowns and beaded embellishments of womenswear. While the consensus for the men this year’s red carpet was mixed at best, there is something to be said about how the theme of “Costume Art” was approached in menswear. Art, after all, is subjective — but does that justify playing it “safe”?
@louisvuitton leaned into classic eveningwear codes, from
@jayz ’s sharply tailored black tailcoat ensemble to
@tyriqwithers ’ crystal-embroidered coat layered with organza and accessorised with a mini trunk. Similarly,
@dior highlighted their take on black-tie dressing with Paul Anthony Kelly’s burgundy velvet tailcoat, paired with a white pleated cotton shirt and black wool pants for a classic silhouette, while
@adrienbrody offset a traditional tuxedo jacket with black leather trousers and a printed silk scarf, adding a contemporary twist to formal dressing.
@ysl maintained its signature style of fluid tailoring, with
@connorstorrieofficial in a lavallière silk muslin top and high-rise trousers alongside Rami Malek in a double-breasted overcoat paired with an oversized scarf.
@balenciaga took a more conceptual approach through
@hudsonwilliamsofficial ’ trompe-l’œil torero ensemble, embroidered with pearls, velvet and satin, paired with a train cape in black silk faille. The look draws inspiration from a 1947 Cristóbal Balenciaga evening bolero, referencing Spanish heritage and matador dress codes through a contemporary lens.
