"This was an idea Sky Ferren and I dreamed up during #Megalopolis and thanks to the talented team at Lux Machina Consulting it became a reality." Alex Coppedge
Witness the combination of a teaser for feature film "Long Live Dick Parker", led by Alex Coppedge, Director, Writer, Executive Producer (Megalopolis, The Instigators, The Bride) combined with testing an all new Megapixel #Ghostframe pipeline (for those in the know: in inner frustum only). Shot at the Lux Stage at Trilith Studios in harmonious partnership with Lux Machina Consulting.
Featuring R & D insight on advanced mathematics, controlling flickering in the frustum, shooting 48 frames per second & consequently messing with motion blur, issues with running Ghostframe on a LED volume this large.. potentially changing the workflow of #VFX and #VirtualProduction as we know it!: starring Wesley Goins, Jason Davis, German Perl & last but no means least Hannah Schilsky.
Featuring production insight, with Production Designer Sky Ferren, who played a big part in making this test happen, working with Cinematographer Nick Bowser to create (physically AND virtually) an old tobacco farm in North Carolina. They built a physical set, where their actor had a place to live, but accentuated the set so it also lives simultaneously in the virtual world. The aim is to marry the traditional physical world with the new virtual tools, trying to make them as seemless as possible..but where they can't be seemless: to use technology like Megapixel Ghostframe to have a Plan B in post.
Hannah, #UnrealEngine Technical Director: "I built a blueprint that, based on the editor's role and the render’s role, it would set the frustum to be blue screen on one cluster and the regular field of view on the other cluster. That way, we were able to swap back and forth on the processors to achieve having GhostFrame in just the frustum. After each take, I would push the shot down directly to Nuke as well."
It's all about collaborative teamwork. It's all about creating in the moment + plan B. Hedge your bets! Get your inner geek on and learn up!

In this final episode of Virtual Skies: we look at the tools of the trade. On designing LED screen slates, proprietary colour science calibration, creating new toolsets for #unrealengine from a light card to a "flak spawner" (you heard it heard first folks!) . Why Masters of the Air "would not have been as successful or maybe even possible, without the Sony Rialto". On powering everything with Lux ARCA and creating A & B render systems to always be ready for the next scene.
The team spilling the technical knowledge beans are: Philip Galler, Will Newman, Cameron Bishop, Jason Bayever, Nicholas Bennett and Rowan Pitts.

The trailer has dropped for Silo, Season 2. Premiering on Apple TV+ on November 15th.
Set in a dystopian future, Silo tells of the last 10,000 people on Earth, where their mile-deep home protects them from the toxic and deadly world outside. Their glimpse into the outdoors is a screen window in the silo’s cafeteria. Lux Machina returned to S2 to build and operate the LED wall within the set.
On the creation of the set for Season 1, Lux Machina President Wyatt Bartel explains, “The screen became a character in the story. It had different layers of dust applied to it as time passed. There were broken LED panels that Lux added to show that the screen had been damaged over time. In a world of resource scarcity, damaging your one window into the outside world is significant for the community. It was interesting to see how impactful LED technology could be when brought to life through the story instead of simply functioning as a backdrop.”

It is sad that we have to say au revoir to the officer and gentleman, Systems Technical Director, Mr James Valpy, "Valpy" to us. James is off, not to another job in the industry, but to work with his brother on his whisky business back home in Scotland.
We all have many wonderful words, as we all wish him all the very best in his new (fermenting liquor) chapter, but we'll leave the last official words and quotable reference to Wyatt Bartel
"I have worked with James Valpy for over 3 years now and he is one of the most dedicated and hard working people I know, with such a tremendous knowledge base within him. He is a fun person to get a drink with, because he will make you laugh. He is a great colleague to work shoulder to shoulder with, because he cares about the work he's doing. He is a great manager because he is the epitome of someone who wants the best for those around him. As our director of technology in the UK and our lead manager of that office, Valpy takes on a large load of responsibilities every day: from designing and building systems, to helping his colleagues with their needs and making sure they're looked after. He is a brilliant man, and seeing the care he has for those around him makes him a great man."
So that's a wrap on the 2024 Valorant Champions Tour Finals @valorantesports at the Inspire Arena, Seoul. And it just gets more WOW every year!
The opening ceremony was creatively led by the brilliant team at DONE+DUSTED @doneanddustedtv , where we worked fluidly with Silent Partners Studio @silentpartnersstudio and Technical Supervisor Russell Spud Murphy.
For the the Main Show, Riot Games @riotgames production team led, with creative from Histeria! @histeria.studios .
Lux Machina provided the screen control and media server systems & talent, powered by Lux ARCA, utilizing Pixera @pixera.one to playback 2D Content on a myriad of Creative Technology Korea @creative_technology built LED Screens.
